  3. Walter Burley on Utterances About the Past.Chiara Paladini - 2021 - Rivista di Filosofia Neo-Scolastica 2:501-520.
Abstract – The basic principle of all realist theories of truth developed in the 13th and 14th centuries was that a proposition is true if and only if it tells us how things are in reality. Walter Burley (1275-1344) interpreted this principle in a more radical way than 13th-century realists did. He proposed a correspondence theory in which there is a strict biunique correspondence between linguistic and extra-linguistic elements. If the principle of correspondence can be applied unconditionally to all affirmative (...)

  6. Holy Terror and the Beauty of It All: How to Live with Existential Anxiety.Dan J. Bruiger - 2021 - Hornby Island, BC V0R 1Z0, Canada: Left Field Press.
Despite confident assertions by science and religion, no one can be absolutely certain what is going on in this drama we call existence. We are haunted by the realization that we are finite, vulnerable, mortal, and perhaps meaningless creatures. The ambiguity in all experience leaves us in a state of fundamental uncertainty, with a buried anxiety underlined by fear of mortality. However, the ability to consider consciousness as a personal creation enables us to appreciate experience for its own sake, despite (...)

  7. A Non-Materialistic View of Person.Rajakishore Nath - 2005 - Journal of Indian Council of Philosophical Research 22 (2):122-136.
In this article, I have argued that persons are individual human beings capable of mental activities. In this sense, persons have not only physical properties, but also various forms of consciousness. I have mentioned that the relation between a person and his/her physical properties are contingent; not logical, but factual. I have also mentioned Descartes' view that a person is a combination of two separate entities- a body and a mind. Only mind is conscious; the physical properties that the person (...)

  8. My Mind is Not the Universe: The Map is Not the Territory.Xiaoyang Yu - manuscript
In order to describe my findings/conclusions systematically, a new semantic system (i.e., a new language) has to be intentionally defined by the present article. Humans are limited in what they know by the technical limitation of their cortical language network. A reality is a situation model (SM). For example, the conventionally-called “physical reality” around my conventionally-called “physical body” is actually a “geometric” SM of my brain. The universe is an autonomous objective parallel computing automaton which evolves by itself automatically/unintentionally – (...)

  10. Reasoning, Defeasibility, and the Taking Condition.Markos Valaris - 2020 - Philosophers' Imprint 20 (28):1-16.
According to the so-called ‘Taking Condition’ (a label due to Boghossian 2014) on inference, for a response R in circumstances C to count as an instance of reasoning or inferring, it must be the case that the agent’s taking it that R is warranted or justified in C plays (the right sort of) explanatory role in her R-ing. The Taking Condition has come under much criticism in the theory of reasoning. While I believe that these criticisms can be answered, my (...)

  11. Mind, Logic and Language: A Philosophical Study with Reference to Wittgenstein and Chomsky.Mudasir Ahmad Tantray - 2019 - Dissertation,
This research work intends to examine and investigate the nature of Mind, its structure, functions and relations with other allied arena’s viz. logic and language. In fact, it also explores logic (inductive/deductive), Language such as its affiliation with the contents of the mind or with the mental processes and mental states. Though the study of Mind, logic and language is very vast in its literature and knowledge, but the affinity between them is limited. Analytical tradition scrutinizes only the empirical and (...)

  12. For a Modest Human Exceptionalism: Simone de Beauvoir and the 'New Materialisms'.Sonia Kruks - 2019 - Simone de Beauvoir Studies 30 (2):252-273.
The "new materialisms' offer an important critique of 'human exceptionalism, however they tend to overstate their case by ignoring those qualities of freedom that remain distinctive to human life. The paper turns to Simone de Beauvoir to make an argument for a more modest human exceptionalism.

  22. Access, Promulgation, and Propaganda.Benjamin L. S. Nelson -
The very idea of promulgation has been given little to no treatment in the philosophy of law. In this exploratory essay, I introduce three possible theories of promulgation: the ‘no-theory theory’ (which treats promulgation as a matter of particular contexts), the ‘conveyance theory’ (which treats promulgation as a function of intellectual good faith interpreters), and ‘agonistic theory’ (which treats promulgation as indistinguishable from propaganda). I suggest that (at least) three kinds of models are consistent with the theories, and can potentially (...)

  23. Kierkegaard on Self, Ethics, and Religion: Purity or Despair.Roe Fremstedal - 2022 - Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
Many of Søren Kierkegaard's most controversial and influential ideas are more relevant than ever to contemporary debates on ethics, philosophy of religion and selfhood. Kierkegaard develops an original argument according to which wholeheartedness requires both moral and religious commitment. In this book, Roe Fremstedal provides a compelling reconstruction of how Kierkegaard develops wholeheartedness in the context of his views on moral psychology, meta-ethics and the ethics of religious belief. He shows that Kierkegaard's influential account of despair, selfhood, ethics and religion (...)

  24. Scientific Epistemology: An Introduction.Hilary Kornblith - 2021 - New York, NY, USA: Oxford University Press, Usa.
"This book provides an introduction to a scientifically informed approach to epistemological questions. Theories of knowledge are often motivated by the need to respond to skepticism. The skeptic presents an argument which seems to show that knowledge is impossible, and a theory of knowledge is called upon to show, contrary to the skeptic, how knowledge is indeed possible. Traditional epistemologies, however, do not draw on the sciences in providing their response to skepticism. The approach taken here, however, shows how an (...)

  25. Theory and Practice of Contrast: Integrating Science, Art and Philosophy.Mariusz Stanowski (ed.) - 2021 - London: Crc Press.
The book Theory and Practice of Contrast completes, corrects and integrates the foundations of science and humanities, which include: theory of art, philosophy (aesthetics, epistemology, ontology, axiology), cognitive science, theory of information, theory of complexity and physics. Through the integration of these distant disciplines, many unresolved issues in contemporary science have been clarified or better understood, among others: defining impact (contrast) and using this definition in different fields of knowledge; understanding what beauty/art is and what our aesthetic preferences depend on; (...)

This article investigates the reception of Nietzsche’s philosophy in Horkheimer’s critical theory of the 1930s. In his 1936 writings, “Egoism and Freedom Movement: on the Anthropology of the Bourgeois Era” and “Authority and the Family”, Horkheimer applies the concepts of internalization of instincts, bad conscience, nihilism, and resentment from On the Genealogy of Morality to bourgeois society aiming to expose how the psychic effects of repression obstruct the potentials for social emancipation even in the present. After relating Horkheimer’s interest in (...)

  27. “The Problem of Evil: Ethical Considerations”.J. W. Steen - 1965 - Canadian Journal of Theology (No. 4):255-264.
The problem of evil is set out as a dialectic between theist and critic, the aim being to reveal the place of ethical judgments in the theist's apology. I discover what ethical judgments, both normative and descriptive, are implicit in the theist's use of his premises as good reasons, and where his reasoning goes astray. I suggest what ethical judgments, in contrast to the theist's, are supported by good reasons.

  28. Mehmet Akif'in Dini Tecrübe Anlayışı.Aysel Tan - 2021 - Ankara, Türkiye: Kütahya Dumlupınar Üniversitesi Lisansüstü Enstitüsü.
Mehmet Akif criticized the way Muslim societies understand religion in his poems and articles. He constantly criticized Muslims' inertia, understanding of trust, false beliefs and imitation. The ideas of Cemaleddin Afganî and his student Muhammed Abduh, Said Halim Pasha on Islamism, and Fahrettin Razi, who struggled for Muslims to gain their independence, set an example for Mehmet Akif in this sense. He believed in the idea of 'Islamic unity' and saw it as a prescription for salvation. It is important how (...)

  34. Institutions and Their Strength.Frank Hindriks - forthcoming - Economics and Philosophy:1-18.
Institutions can be strong or weak. But what does this mean? Equilibrium theories equate institutions with behavioural regularities. In contrast, rule theories explicate them in terms of a standard that people are supposed to meet. I propose that, when an institution is weak, a discrepancy exists between the regularity and the standard or rule. To capture this discrepancy, I present a hybrid theory, the Rules-and-Equilibria Theory. According to this theory, institutions are rule-governed behavioural regularities. The Rules-and-Equilibria Theory provides the basis (...)

  35. UTILITY OF RATIONALITY IN ISLAMIC SHARIA.Mudasir Ahmad Tantray & Tariq Rafeeq Khan - 2020 - Kalyan Bharati 36 (16):108-114.
Reason or logic is elementary thought elucidated and emphasized in holly Quran and Hadith. Every idea in the interpreted verses of Quran and Hadith has logical aspect to describe it. Senses are the gate ways of knowing and reason is the hub of interpretation and organization. We can say that senses only collect data and reason interprets it. Logic is derived from the Greek word “Logos” which means “Art of reasoning”. Reasoning is of three kind: inductive (from particular to general), (...)

  36. CONCEPT OF UNIVERSAL PROPOSITION (UDHARANA) IN NAYAYA PHILOSOPHY.Mudasir Ahmad Tantray & Tariq Rafeeq Khan - 2021 - Anvesak 51 (1):29-36.
proposition. Universal proposition is defined as the proposition in which the relation between the subject term and the predicate term is without any condition, in which the predicate is either affirmed or denied of the subject unconditionally. In nyaya logic the term vyapti is a universal proposition or invariable relation between the middle term (linga/hetu) and the major term (sadya) . According to the category of relation propositions are divided into categorical and the conditional. Although proposition is a logical entity (...)

  39. Francis Bacon’s Quasi-Materialism and its Nineteenth-Century Reception (Joseph de Maistre and Karl Marx).Silvia Manzo - 2020 - Journal of Early Modern Studies 9 (2):109-138.
This paper will address the nineteenth-century reception of Bacon as an exponent of materialism in Joseph de Maistre and Karl Marx. I will argue that Bacon’s philosophy is “quasi-materialist.” The materialist components of his philosophy were noticed by de Maistre and Marx, who, in addition, pointed out a Baconian materialist heritage. Their construction of Bacon’s figure as the leader of a materialist lineage ascribed to his philosophy a revolutionary import that was contrary to Bacon’s actual leanings. This contrast shows how (...)

  40. On the Nature of Consciousness.Sergei Vasiljev - manuscript
The material world is determined and its boundaries are established on the basis of fundamental physical laws. It turns out that the non-material world is not empty. In this world the substance has been discovered that looks like a consciousness. Consciousness has the ability to interact with matter and determine the state of matter within the limits determined by the Heisenberg uncertainty relations. It is shown that elementary particles have something that can be called as elementary consciousness. More complicated consciousnesses (...)

  41. Diversity From a Fundamental Unity ⵙ and its Projections.Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar - manuscript
In this letter, the underlying basis of nature in physical processes is presented to be that of existence, experience and entirety, encapsulated in ⵙ, a fundamental unity from which space-time, causality and all diversified physical phenomena are posited to emerge. The operative element in the emergence is an apparent flux-entity ξ, through which is projected. We see a trade-off between the inherent entangling and equilibriating tendency of and the dissipative nature of ξ, which leads to self-selection in physical systems.

Gurbani helps up to decode Nature's invaluable lessons. Gurbani enunciates that Nature helps us to develop compassion and inner balance. It also guides us to help others to lead better lives. The interplay of five classical elements-air, water, fire, earth and akasha is the fundamental cause of all-natural phenomena. Let us (...)

  43. The Possibility of Epistemic Nudging: Reply to Grundmann.Jonathan Matheson & Valerie Joly Chock - 2021 - Social Epistemology Review and Reply Collective 10 (8):36-42.
In “The Possibility of Epistemic Nudging” (2021), Thomas Grundmann examines nudging as applied to doxastic attitudes. Grundmann argues that given the right presuppositions about knowledge, justified beliefs, and the relevant belief-forming processes, doxastic nudging can result in justified beliefs and even knowledge in the nudgee. In this short response we will raise some critical concerns for Grundmann’s project as well as open up a path for epistemic nudges (nudges that result in justified beliefs or knowledge) that Grundmann too quickly dismisses.

  44. The IKEA Effect & The Production of Epistemic Goods.Justin Tiehen - manuscript
Behavioral economists have proposed that people are subject to an IKEA effect, whereby they attach greater value to products they make for themselves, like IKEA furniture, than to otherwise indiscernible goods. Recently, cognitive psychologist Tom Stafford has suggested there may be an epistemic analog to this, a kind of epistemic IKEA effect. In this paper, I use Stafford’s suggestion to defend a certain thesis about epistemic value. Specifically, I argue that there is a distinctive epistemic value in being an active (...)

  46. Did God Guide Our Evolution? It From Bit?Moorad Alexanian - 2021 - Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith 73 (3):190-191.
The study of man on Earth is a historical science akin to forensic science and is best conducted with the truth of scripture in mind. Surely, this approach is quite consistent with Bussey’s argument since the presence of God is needed in our spacetime to create not only life and mind but also human beings in God’s image.
