  1. A note on formalizing discussive logic.Hitoshi Omori & Igor Sedlar - 2025 - Australasian Journal of Logic 22 (1):33-43.
Discussive logic was introduced by Jaskowski as a logic of discussion. In this note we show that some natural translation-based formalizations of discussive logic in modal logic do not yield a paraconsistent logic but rather classical logic. Some alternative modal formalizations of discussive logic that avoid the collapse into classical logic are put forward.

  2. Negated Implications in Connexive Relevant Logics.Andrew Tedder - 2025 - Australasian Journal of Logic 22 (1):8-32.
Connexive expansions of relevant logics tend to prove every negated implication formula. In this paper I discuss why they tend to satisfy this unsavoury property, and discuss avenues by which it can be avoided, providing logics which stand as proofs of concept that these avenues can be made to work.

  3. On a Suggested Logic for Paraconsistent Mathematics.John Slaney - 2025 - Australasian Journal of Logic 22 (1):1-7.
The logic subDL and its quantified extension subDLQ were proposed by Badia and Weber (Dialethism and its Applications, 2019: 155-176) as a basis for developing a version of mathematics in which paradoxes are harmless. In the present paper, subDL as defined in the literature is shown to be too strong to support the theories which motivate it. The crucial point is that contraction is derivable in subDL. It follows that the semantic structure used by Badia and Weber to invalidate contraction (...)

  4. On Nilpotent Minimum logics defined by lattice filters and their paraconsistent non-falsity preserving companions.Joan Gispert, Francesc Esteva, Lluís Godo & Marcelo E. Coniglio - forthcoming - Logic Journal of the IGPL.
Nilpotent Minimum logic (NML) is a substructural algebraizable logic that is a distinguished member of the family of systems of Mathematical Fuzzy logic, and at the same time it is the axiomatic extension with the prelinearity axiom of Nelson and Markov’s Constructive logic with strong negation. In this paper our main aim is to characterize and axiomatize paraconsistent variants of NML and its extensions defined by (sets of) logical matrices over linearly ordered NM-algebra with lattice filters as designated values, with (...)

  5. Chorological abductive inferring: case studies of tracing spatial dissemination of COVID-19.Piotr A. Werner - forthcoming - Logic Journal of the IGPL.
COVID-19 did not disappear in the third year (2022) of the global pandemic. On the contrary, the number of infected people several times exceeded the highs of previous years, but the greater morbidity was not accompanied by a relatively comparable number of deaths. Some studies showed that the SARS-CoV-2 virus impact, e.g. in CEE EU countries, characterizes the seasonal intensity as temperatures fall or rise in relative humidity. All researchers agree that the number of COVID-19-infected people is only an estimate (...)

  6. The explanation dialogues: an expert focus study to understand requirements towards explanations within the GDPR.Laura State, Alejandra Bringas Colmenarejo, Andrea Beretta, Salvatore Ruggieri, Franco Turini & Stephanie Law - forthcoming - Artificial Intelligence and Law:1-60.
Explainable AI (XAI) provides methods to understand non-interpretable machine learning models. However, we have little knowledge about what legal experts expect from these explanations, including their legal compliance with, and value against European Union legislation. To close this gap, we present the Explanation Dialogues, an expert focus study to uncover the expectations, reasoning, and understanding of legal experts and practitioners towards XAI, with a specific focus on the European General Data Protection Regulation. The study consists of an online questionnaire and (...)

  8. Feyerabend and the Philosophy of Physics, Part II.Michael T. Stuart & Jamie Shaw - 2024 - International Studies in the Philosophy of Science 37 (4):155-159.
Paul K Feyerabend’s engagement with physics started before his engagement with philosophy, and he continued to think about new developments in physics until the end. To understand Feyerabend’s philosophy, therefore, it is crucial to understand his views on physics, many of which have remained unpublished until now. Doing so pays off, not only in helping us to understand the history of philosophy of science, but also insofar as it opens up new resources for contemporary philosophy of physics. The papers collected (...)

  9. From Quantum Holism to the Disunity of Science and Social Activism: The Cat-Feyerabend Correspondence.Jordi Cat & Jamie Shaw - 2024 - International Studies in the Philosophy of Science 37 (4):243-290.
This essay offers a discussion and contextualisation of a series of letters exchanged between Jordi Cat and Paul Feyerabend from 1989 to 1994. These letters provide insights into Feyerabend’s later thought on a variety of themes including quantum holism, the disunity of science, the development of logical empiricism, and science activism. In doing so, we provide some original analysis and exegesis of Feyerabend’s evolving views on scientific methodology and quantum mechanics by focusing on Feyerabend’s changing attitudes towards Bohm, Bohr, and (...)

  10. Realism with Quantum Faces: The Leggett–Garg Inequalities as a Case Study for Feyerabend's Views.Elise Crull - 2024 - International Studies in the Philosophy of Science 37 (4):195-217.
In this paper I attempt to broaden Feyerabend scholarship by asking whether and how Feyerabend's philosophy of science, in particular his commitments to realism and pluralism about scientific theories as well as anarchism about scientific methods, is borne out in multidisciplinary research concerning the Leggett–Garg inequalities. These inequalities were derived explicitly to be a temporal analogue to Bell's inequalities: the viability of macroscopic realism is tested against the predictions of quantum mechanics by performing a series measurements on a macroscopic variable (...)

  11. Tightrope-Walking Rationality in Action: Feyerabendian Insights for the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics.Daniele Oriti - 2024 - International Studies in the Philosophy of Science 37 (4):161-193.
We scan Paul K. Feyerabend's work in philosophy of physics and of science more generally for insights that could be useful for the contemporary debate on the foundations of quantum mechanics. We take as our starting point what Feyerabend has actually written about quantum mechanics, but we extend our analysis to his general views on realism, objectivity, pluralism, and the relation between physics and philosophy, finding that these more general views could in fact offer many interesting insights for physicists and (...)

  12. Curiosity, Awe and Wonder: The Emotions that Open Our Mind.Francis Heylighen - forthcoming - Foundations of Science:1-27.
This paper explores how the epistemic emotions of curiosity, awe, and wonder can motivate us to expand our understanding. Curiosity drives us to fill a local gap in our knowledge. Awe is a mixture of fear and fascination for something so vast and mysterious that it challenges our understanding, thus inciting cognitive accommodation. Wonder is intermediate between curiosity and awe. Awe is commonly understood as a religious emotion, a reverence for the “numinous”—a transcendent reality out of bounds for ordinary humans. (...)

  13. On the Neo-Empiricist Thesis and Historicity of Science: Enriques and Neurath.Mirella Fortino - forthcoming - Foundations of Science:1-19.
In this article, which testifies the European dimension of Federigo Enriques, an essential question is raised: is it conceivable to admit a radical antithesis between logical empiricism or neo-empiricism and the Enriquesian view of scientific thought? This paper therefore analyses the relationship between Enriques’ conception of science and that of Otto Neurath, one of the main representatives of neo-empiricism. While the interest towards empiricism in Enriques’ conception of the scientific knowledge is emphasised, it cannot be denied that the relationship of (...)

  15. Intellectual inflation: one way for scientific research to degenerate.Javier Anta - forthcoming - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A.
This paper aims to analyze a specific way in which a scientific programme or area can, in Lakatosian terms, degenerate: namely, through a developmental process of intellectual inflation. Adopting a pluralist approach to the notion of scientific progress, we propose that the historical development of a particular scientific area can be analyzed as being intellectually inflationary during a bounded period of time if it has considerably increased its productive output (thus displaying productive progress) while the overall semantic or epistemic value (...)

  17. A Comprehensive Empirical Study Determining Practitioners' Views on Docker Development Difficulties: Stack Overflow Analysis.Tambi Varun Kumar - 2024 - International Journal of Innovative Research in Computer and Communication Engineering 12 (1):157-164.
Through an examination of Stack Overflow posts, this study explores Docker-related subjects and difficulties in order to pinpoint common problems and patterns in Docker development. We created an extensive dataset of Docker conversations by utilising both tag-based and content-based filtering techniques. These conversations were categorised using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modelling, which showed that the most common theme is Application Development, which includes topics like Framework Management, Coding Problems, Data Transfer, and Docker-specific frameworks. Because of Docker's strong market presence, (...)

  18. Popper and Lakatos on what is distinctive about empirical science.Dmytro Sepetyi - forthcoming - International Studies in the Philosophy of Science.
This article offers critical analysis of the debate between Karl Popper and Imre Lakatos about distinctive features of empirical science that allow to demarcate it from non-science and especially pseudoscience. Popper's demarcational proposition is explained as involving essentially two requirements, logical (to the theory itself, that it had potential falsifiers) and methodological (to scientists' attitude with respect to the theory, that they were willing to recognise its empirical falsification. Lakatos's criticisms of ‘Popper's basic rule’ that ‘criteria of refutation have to (...)

  20. PAPR Reduction with Palindromic Codes Using Biasing Vector Technique in OFDM.M. V. S. Sairam & B. Prabhakara Rao - 2009 - International Journal of Electronics Engineering 1 (2):157-159.
The main drawback of the OFDM system is high Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR), which calls for high power amplifiers in the system. This problem can be mitigated by using Block codes that are Non Transparent. We investigated the potential of the Palindromic codes in reducing the PAPR with the proposed biasing method. Using exhaustive search, a bias vector of n bits is chosen and added to all possible codewords (using modulo-2 addition) such that the maximum PAPR of all (...)

  21. The replication crisis is less of a “crisis” in Lakatos’ philosophy of science than it is in Popper’s.Mark Rubin - 2025 - European Journal for Philosophy of Science 15 (1):1-20.
Popper’s (1983, 2002) philosophy of science has enjoyed something of a renaissance in the wake of the replication crisis, offering a philosophical basis for the ensuing science reform movement. However, adherence to Popper’s approach may also be at least partly responsible for the sense of “crisis” that has developed following multiple unexpected replication failures. In this article, I contrast Popper’s approach with that of Lakatos (1978) as well as with a related but problematic approach called naïve methodological falsificationism (NMF; Lakatos, (...)

The level of accuracy needed to identify the type of tumor using MRI data is necessary to choose the best method for medical care. The K-Nearest Neighbor approach, a fundamental scientific application and image classification technique, can be used to computationally analyze MRI results. The objective of the tumor classification system is to identify the tumor. The only information used to analyze data for this type of system comes from the MRI's axial portion, which are divided into three categories they (...)

  24. AICTE AI-Based Assistive Portal for Stakeholder (Institutions) Approval Process.C. H. Pavan Kumar - 2024 - International Journal of Engineering Innovations and Management Strategies 1 (2):1-12.
The AICTE approval process for institutions plays a critical role in regulating technical education in India, ensuring quality and adherence to established standards. However, the current system is cumbersome, leading to delays and inefficiencies. This paper proposes the development of an AI-powered assistive portal that automates key stages of the approval process. The portal aims to reduce manual errors, provide real-time feedback, and enhance user experience for stakeholders, thereby improving overall system efficiency and transparency.

  25. Identification and Extraction of Forward Error Correction (FEC) Schemes from Unknown Demodulated Signals.A. Abhishek - 2024 - International Journal of Engineering Innovations and Management Strategies 1 (2):1-14.
The project focuses on the development of a tool for identifying and extracting Forward Error Correction (FEC) schemes from unknown demodulated signals. FEC is a vital communication technique that ensures error-free data transmission without the need for retransmission, particularly in satellite communications, digital broadcasting, and deepspace applications. The proposed solution involves using Python to preprocess signals, detect FEC schemes, and then extract the specific coding parameters. Different FEC schemes such as BCH, Convolutional Codes, Turbo Codes, and LDPC codes are explored (...)

  26. A praxeology of the value of life. A critique of Rothbard’s argument.Paweł Nowakowski - 2024 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 76:425-456.
The present paper aims to study the issue of the value of life in Murray N. Rothbard’s work, and to examine his argument for the contention that “life _should_ be an objective ultimate value” and that “the preservation and furtherance of one’s life takes on the stature of an incontestable axiom.” Rothbard’s assumptions and presuppositions are investigated and critically assessed. Using conceptual and logical analysis rooted mostly in the praxeological method of economics (as developed by Mises and Rothbard himself) and (...)

  27. Demonstrated preference in the Austrian economic analysis.Dawid Megger - 2024 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 76:391-423.
This paper is an attempt to clarify the concept of demonstrated preference in the economic analysis of the Austrian School of Economics. It considers several interpretations of this concept: (1) as a thymological concept which matters in empirical interpretations of concrete human actions; (2) as a preference expressed in voluntary actions; (3) as the only existing preference; (4) as the only preference which matters in economics; (5) as the only preference which matters in the economy. It is argued that despite (...)

  28. Monarchy as private property government. A chiefly methodological critique.Norbert Slenzok - 2024 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 76:359-389.
Hans-Hermann Hoppe famously argued that monarchy is superior to democracy insofar as property rights protection is concerned. The present paper calls this claim into question, with much of the heavy lifting being done by methodological ponderings. More specifically, it is demonstrated that instead of _a priori_, praxeological truths, Hoppe’s monarchy theory offers an ideal type of the politician bestowed with an inheritable title to the throne. Against this background, the ideal type in question is shown to be faulty in that (...)

  29. The law of diminishing marginal utility as law of mental order-ness.Matus Posvanc - 2024 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 76:317-358.
Nozick (1977) formulated a challenge to Austrians related to the application of the Law of diminishing marginal utility in the context of notion of indifference. To be able to claim that the value or attributed utility of the subsequent units of goods decreases, we must compare comparables, even if deliberate choice means that we have chosen a particular as being value-different. This causes a logical paradox. One cannot be indifferent and demonstrate a particular preference at the same time. It is (...)

  30. Social welfare, interventionism, and indeterminacy: In defense of Rothbard.Igor Wysocki & Łukasz Dominiak - 2024 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 76:297-315.
The present paper argues that Rothbard’s economic case against the state is more robust than suggested by his critics. The charge that it might be anemic is based on the suggestion that we can say literally nothing about the way governmental acts bear on social utility. Contra this supposition we submit that Rothbard’s critics missed the fact that the effects of governmental interventions might be actually indeterminate in two ways: weakly or strongly. If the indeterminacy involved in his welfare theory (...)

  31. The role of phronesis in Knowledge-Based Economy.Anna Ceglarska & Katarzyna Cymbranowicz - 2024 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 76:257-296.
The aim of this paper is to reflect on contemporary understanding of “knowledge” within the Knowledge-Based Economy. Since the pursuit of knowledge has been a longstanding focus of European culture since Greek philosophy, we employ the original ancient terminology. Applying the hermeneutics of ancient texts along with critical and comparative analysis can aid in differentiating between “knowledge” and “wisdom”, often linked in modern theories, while also connecting this issue to the Aristotelian concept of _phronesis_. The authors argue that since human (...)

  32. Ludwig Lachmann: A subjectivist institutionalist, but not a nihilist.Krzysztof Turowski - 2024 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 76:205-256.
The legacy of Ludwig Lachmann within the Austrian School of Economics is subject to several interpretations in the literature: though he clearly considered himself a member of the school and he influenced many Austrian economists, his particular methodological claims prompted Murray Rothbard to disavow him as a nihilist. In this article, we defend Lachmann by arguing that in order to defend his methodological stance he invoked extra-Austrian influences (Max Weber, G.L.S. Shackle). This way, he championed subjectivist institutionalism consistently both in (...)

  33. Model uncertainty: When modeling risk leads to a pretense of knowledge.Mateusz Machaj - 2024 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 76:151-175.
The main purpose of the paper is to develop a concept of _model uncertainty_ as opposed to the existing and well-established concept of model risk. Up to date the broad literature on probability not only developed complete probability systems, but also correctly noticed limitations of probability calculus. Despite the acknowledgement of such probability restrictions, drawbacks of modeling are often related to model risk. We present an argument here to distinguish a feature limiting models even further: model uncertainty. The tenets of (...)

  34. Taxation and the philosophy of Frédéric Bastiat.Robert McGee - 2024 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 76:177-203.
Frederic Bastiat (1801-1850) was an economist and journalist. A member of the French Liberal School, he is best known for his free trade ideas and his philosophy of law. Mark Blaug ranks him as one of the 100 greatest economists before Keynes. Schumpeter called him a brilliant economic journalist. Haney devoted a chapter of his History of Economic Thought to Bastiat. Although Bastiat is known for his work on free trade and the philosophy of law, he also wrote on other (...)

  35. On the philosophy and logic of human action: A Neo-Austrian contribution to the methodology of the social sciences.Michael Oliva Cordoba - 2024 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 76:107-150.
Philosophical action theory seems to be in pretty good shape. The same may not be true for the study of human action in economics. Famous is the rant that the study of human action in economics gives reason to tremble for the reputation of the subject. But how does this come about? Since economic action is about action, the broader study must surely have a strong impact on the more specific field. The paper sets out, from the ground up, how (...)
