Value Theory
  1. Understanding value: the devil’s in the details.A. I. S. D. L. Team - 2025 - Sm3D Portal.
In our attempt to explore possible solutions for the world’s grave environmental problems, our book titled Better economics for the Earth proposes a new approach to understanding and redefining value. A good explanation is provided in Tran (2025), which informs us that the current approach to understanding value has been criticized for trying to “put a price tag on nature” without fundamentally challenging the underlying economic paradigm. To further support the process of change, concerning our understanding value, we now introduce (...)

  3. Knowledge of strategic trade act 2010 and technology transfer among researchers in Malaysia.Amirah 'Aisha Badrul Hisham, Nor Ashikin Mohamed Yusof, Siti Hasliah Salleh & Intan Sazrina Saimy - forthcoming - Research Ethics.
The transfer of dual-use technologies, which can be used for both civilian and military applications, has become a critical issue for national and international security. In response, the Strategic Trade Act 2010 (STA 2010) was enacted in Malaysia to regulate the export, transit, and transshipment of strategic items, including dual-use goods and technologies. However, despite its importance, researchers in Malaysia’s Higher Learning Institutions exhibit lack of awareness and understanding of the Act, potentially placing national security at risk through unintended breaches (...)

  4. Abortion Restrictions and Formative Autonomy.Sarah Zoe Raskoff - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):433-455.
It is often morally important that you have a choice between two options in the sense that each option is available to you and you are not coerced into choosing one or the other. Even when you have a choice, though, the presence of time constraints and other noncoercive influences can prevent you from taking the time you need to make up your mind and really choose for yourself. How are we to understand this latter phenomenon? In this essay, I (...)

  5. Never Waste a Good Crisis: COVID-19 and Research Ethics.Søren Holm - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):370-390.
The public health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic led to a rapid surge in activity in biomedical and social science. The pandemic created a need for new scientific knowledge specifically related to the new, emerging infectious agent and it quickly showed huge gaps in knowledge in relation to social and policy responses to pandemics. Governments all over the world accepted the COVID-19 pandemic as a significant public health crisis and went into crisis mode in order to end the crisis (...)

  6. Pragmatic Clinical Research, Informed Consent, and Clinical Equipoise.Lynn A. Jansen - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):306-326.
There is a growing movement within contemporary medical ethics to blur the boundaries between clinical medicine and clinical research. Some writers now argue that the research-practice distinction is outdated and the importance of distinguishing between research and medicine is no longer as pressing as it once was or seemed to be. Instead, we are now urged to view the health-care system as a dynamic “learning health-care system” in which research components are embedded within standard clinical care. This essay defends the (...)

In clinical trials involving experimental subjects who are also patients, what is supposed to become of the imperative to focus on the patient’s best interest? A second set of policy questions concerns patients who want to die. Are there limits to the imperative to let patients choose for themselves? Is commodification a threat to autonomy? When, if ever, do costs and benefits become decisively important? Can we know what to count as a cost-effective preparation for the next pandemic? When we (...)

  8. Political Ideology and Public Health.Jessica Flanigan - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):505-526.
The ideological nature of public health is a problem for the profession. Ideological uniformity in the field of public health undermines scholars’ and officials’ legitimacy and compromises their ability effectively to prevent death and disease. I first provide some evidence that public health is ideological and then I argue that the ideology of public health is counterproductive. Additionally, public officials are also likely to violate people’s rights in trying to advance their ideology through public health policy. In light of these (...)

  9. Trading Off Lives and Livelihoods.Greg Bognar - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):350-369.
Public health emergencies sometimes require the restriction of civil liberties through social distancing: lockdowns, quarantines, the closure of public spaces and institutions, and so on. Social distancing measures can decrease mortality and morbidity, but they also cause social and economic harm. Policymakers have to make trade-offs between “lives and livelihoods,” while introducing only minimally necessary restrictions on civil liberties. Traditionally, cost-benefit analysis has played a central role in formulating these trade-offs. Recently, however, some philosophers have argued that the trade-offs should (...)

  10. The Moral of the Story: Contesting Narratives at the Nexus of Science and Policy During COVID-19.Carolyn Hughes Tuohy - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):410-432.
Using the case of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies in the United Kingdom as illustration, this essay offers a framework for understanding the role of narratives and competition among narratives in mediating the relationships between scientific advisers and policymakers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the pandemic, competing judgments about scientific independence and democratic accountability, about the risks of action and inaction, and about the appropriate balance of costs and benefits to society as a whole and to subgroups of the (...)

  11. Health Policy and Innocent Threats: Abortion and Time Limits, Pandemics and Harm Prevention.F. M. Kamm - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):456-479.
This essay considers how the fact that some morally innocent person is nevertheless a threat to others can bear on the permissibility of health policies that harm some to protect others. Two types of innocent threats are distinguished. In the case of abortion, it is argued that even if the embryo/fetus were a person, abortion could be permissible to protect a woman’s life, health, or bodily autonomy. Whether there nevertheless should be time limits on abortions and what surprising form such (...)

Thousands of people will suffer and die this year because we do not donate enough substances of human origin, including blood plasma. To solve this, some recommend that we allow commercial organizations to assist in collecting these and that we permit donor compensation as a tool to encourage donations. Many object to these proposals, including for semiotic or expressive reasons. But insofar as these objections rely on meanings and these meanings are social constructs, we can revise the meaning of these (...)

  13. Informed Consent, Autonomy, False Beliefs, and Ignorance.James Stacey Taylor - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):546-564.
It is widely believed that health policy should take care to ensure that persons are informed about the expected risks as well as the anticipated advantages of medical procedures. This is often justified by a concern for the moral value of personal autonomy, as it is widely believed that to the extent that a person makes decisions on the basis of false beliefs or ignorance her autonomy with respect to them is compromised. This essay argues against this widespread claim. A (...)

  14. Public Health as If People Mattered.Michael F. Cannon - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):480-504.
This essay offers a framework for analyzing whether government may justifiably intervene to contain the spread of disease. Nonconsensual transmission of dangerous pathogens is an inherently violent act. This framework therefore justifies government public health activities for the same reasons and only to the same extent as other government activities. Government public health interventions are legitimate only to the extent they minimize the amount of violence in society. Violence-minimization is a more egalitarian and welfare-enhancing rule than, for example, a rule (...)

  15. Structural Hobbling: Regressive Harm, Diffuse Responsibility, and Structural Injustice.Lauren Hall - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):391-409.
The past five years have seen a dramatic increase in scholars working to supplement or challenge accounts of structural injustice. Almost without exception, scholars in this area assume that the move from personal responsibility to political or public responsibility will represent a net gain in justice, at least in modern liberal regimes. In this essay, I challenge this assumption and introduce the concept of “structural hobbling” as a parallel cause of injustice, but one whose origins derive from neutral state activities (...)

  16. Rethinking Assisted Dying.Udo Schüklenk - 2024 - Social Philosophy and Policy 41 (2):327-349.
As more jurisdictions permit a medically assisted death (MAiD)—and none of the jurisdictions that introduced MAiD has seen any serious attempts at reversing it—the focus of debate has turned to the question of what is a morally defensible access threshold for MAiD. This permits us to rethink the moral reasons for the legalization or decriminalization of assisted dying. Unlike what is assumed in many legislative frameworks, unbearable suffering caused by terminal illness is not what oftentimes motivates decisionally capable people to (...)

  17. Small Amendment Arguments: How They Work and What They Do and Do Not Show.Martin van Hees, Akshath Jitendranath & Roland Iwan Luttens - 2025 - Theory and Decision 98 (1):153-163.
The small improvement argument has been said to establish that the standard weak preference or value relation can be incomplete. We first show that the argument is one of three possible ‘small amendment arguments’, each of which would yield the same conclusion. Generalizing the analysis thus, we subsequently present a strong and a weak version of small amendment arguments and derive the exact rationality conditions under which they reveal incompleteness. The results show that the arguments (in any of their variants) (...)

  18. A Call for Epistemic Humility in Political Philosophy.Gregory Robson - 2025 - Public Affairs Quarterly 39 (1):1-18.
Political philosophers old and new have defended the twin claims that (i) traditions embody wisdom, and (ii) transforming tradition based on aprioristic theory threatens to disregard that wisdom. This article argues that while a priori theorizing about justice is indeed epistemically valuable, a priori theories of justice usually tend to merit moderate to low credences. The article develops an account of what I call the “A Priori Theorizing Thesis,” which holds that such theses are likely to be false and dangerous (...)

  19. A Kantian Case against Sensitivity Readers.Brooks Sommerville - 2025 - Public Affairs Quarterly 39 (1):43-65.
Some publishers are commissioning sensitivity readers to edit works without the author's permission. While a set of high-profile cases have received public criticism, the publisher's ownership of the relevant material in each case has been thought to rule out any serious legal objection to the practice. This paper proposes that Immanuel Kant's distinctive legal framework supports the view that a publisher who commissions sensitivity readers without the author's permission thereby wrongs either the living author or the reading public.

  20. Virtuous Constructions in Legal Reasoning.Silvia Corradi - forthcoming - Topoi:1-12.
Following the Aristotelian constructivism proposed by Mark LeBar, the paper outlines a possible metaethical framework of values, necessary elements within legal reasoning. This framework proposes a consideration of values that need to be virtuously constructed, namely through the virtue of _phronesis_. In this way, legal reasoning can take into account more elements concerning the specific legal case, not only legal provisions, but also abstract objects, such as pain. The central feature of _phronesis_ will lead to support a virtue-ethical approach to (...)

  22. Pragmatic and ethical challenges in navigating inauthentic participation in remote qualitative research.Katelin Hoskins, Kelly Sebetka, Arielle Thomas, Joseph Simonetti, I. I. Johnny Williams & Gabriela Kattan Khazanov - forthcoming - Research Ethics.
Restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a rapid shift toward remote qualitative recruitment and data collection. This shift generated considerable opportunities to conduct qualitative research, but also introduced novel challenges to data integrity in the form of inauthentic participants. While newer literature describes potential strategies that may be deployed to target concerns related to inauthentic participation, an explicit focus on equity and ethical considerations has been largely absent from current discourse. Here we describe our experiences and challenges (...)

Gustav Radbruch’s contributions have significantly shaped our understanding of the science of criminal law. This paper analyzes the most decisive aspects of his work. In particular, his conception of the complex relationship between law, reality, and value, the consequences of his method and relativism for criminal law, his conception of the theory of crime, and the science of criminal law are discussed. Finally, the paper highlights the central aspects of the legacy that Gustav Radbruch has left to the science of (...)

This study addresses the analysis of the main lexical patterns, mostly in the form of adverbial locutions and idioms, which could be classified as meteorological metaphors (or meteo-metaphors) used in the Spanish digital sports press and tries to find out if there is a specific sport in which metaphors that use weather phenomena to describe or characterize aspects of sports stand out. From a quasi-experimental approach, a method of content analysis is used on a generated corpus based on the 20 (...)

  29. Caring About Our Own Epistemic Capacities qua Responsible Citizens.Patrizia Pedrini - forthcoming - Topoi:1-10.
Are citizens responsible for their own bad epistemic conduct? What grounds do we have for such accountability practice? And what if citizens lack education and knowledge on how evidence should be considered and thus acted upon? Does ignorance of this kind excuse them, or are there still normative margins for legitimately holding them accountable? In this paper, I wish to chart the legitimate options that we have for our practice of moral accountability in the epistemic domain, in particular the one (...)

  30. Stoic Versions of the Guise of the Good.Riin Sirkel - forthcoming - Journal of Value Inquiry:1-7.
My contribution focuses on the early chapters of Francesco Orsi’s book The Guise of the Good: A Philosophical History (2023), specifically on Orsi’s interpretation of the Stoic account of the guise of the good. I will argue that Stoic philosophy encompasses all three variations regarding the objective or subjective understanding of the phrase “x appears under the guise of the good,” as distinguished by Orsi. The Stoics can be interpreted as endorsing the Subjective Only view in connection with desires, the (...)

The Procreation Asymmetry, in strongest form, states (roughly) that while we have no reason to create happy people, we do have reason not to create unhappy people. Despite its popularity among non-utilitarian philosophers, it has been surprisingly difficult to give an adequate theoretical defense of this asymmetry. However, in a recent paper, Johann Frick attempts to provide a unified account of the asymmetry that avoids the problems with previous attempts. One of Frick’s novel claims is that a certain wide-scope conditional (...)

  35. The Limits of Liberty-Based Arguments for a Universal Basic Income in advance.Fabian Wendt - forthcoming - Social Theory and Practice.
The article argues that liberty-based arguments alone are not enough to justify a universal basic income, whether as a replacement of current welfare programs, or as an addition to them. Appeals to negative liberty, real freedom, republican liberty, and autonomy cannot show that a universal basic income is superior to (all kinds of) conditional benefits. To do so, proponents of a universal basic income will have to invoke values beyond liberty.

  36. Is There a “Distinct Religious Sphere”? in advance.Ben Cross - forthcoming - Social Theory and Practice.
According to Daniel Philpott (2009, 2019, 2021), religious activity can be understood as meaningfully distinct from political activity. Call this the distinct sphere claim. In this article, I will argue that the distinct sphere claim should be rejected. I will consider three different arguments for the distinct sphere claim that Philpott appears to offer: that it is generally accepted by adherents of religions; that it follows from a suitable definition of religion; and that it is supported by everyday intuitions about (...)

Janne Mattila’s _The Eudaimonist Ethics of al-Farabi and Avicenna_ offers a systematic exploration of how al-Farabi and Avicenna, two prominent figures in classical Islamic philosophy, developed distinct ethical frameworks grounded in the concept of eudaimonia. This book examines how both thinkers navigated classical Greek influences, especially those of Aristotle and Plato, while integrating Islamic philosophical principles to develop unique ethical systems. The work addresses the relative lack of focused scholarship on these philosophers’ ethical thought, emphasizing that their ethics extend beyond (...)
