Interpreters generally understand Heidegger's notion of finitude in one of two ways: as our mortality – that, in the end, we are certain to die; or the susceptibility of our self- and world-understanding to collapse – the fragility and vulnerability of human sense-making. In this paper, I put forward an alternative account of what Heidegger means by ‘finitude’: human self- and world-understanding is non-transparently grounded in a ‘final end.’ Our self- and world-understanding, that is, begins at the end, and authenticity (...) requires us to interpretively appropriate the full range of this understanding. After laying out this view of finitude, via an analogical appeal to the Socratic account of action and desire in the Gorgias, I discuss its relationship to the two leading views of finitude mentioned above. This paper offers a nexus of terms – mortality, limits, contingency and vulnerability – painting a picture of human life as marked by limitation and finitude. I suggest that limitations of possibility, capacity, and resource are deep features of human life, but not only restrict it. Limits are also the conditions of possibility for human life and as such have productive, normative, and creative powers that not only delimit life but also scaffold growth and transformation within it. The paper takes (...) a less known interpretation of the term ‘ephēmeros', to mean ‘of the day', rather than ‘short-lived' and suggests that as ephemeral, human life is contingent and mutable, subject to events beyond our control. However, virtue can still be exercised – indeed, can be exuberantly displayed – when we respond to contingent events marked by adversity. (shrink)

Los análisis sobre la finitud que Heidegger lleva a cabo en su obra temprana son puestas en cuestión por Emmanuel Levinas y su ética de la alteridad, lo que supone nueva forma de pensar la subjetividad misma, la relación con el otro y la apertura al tiempo. Se mostrará que en la obra de E. Levinas las reflexiones sobre el tiempo están precedidas y condicionadas por el encuentro con la alteridad del otro hombre (Autrui), que en la diacronía de su (...) irrupción configura la experiencia temporal como lo in-asumible desde el presente de la representación. Se niega así a la muerte como origen del tiempo y del privilegio que el porvenir reviste en la obra de Heidegger: más que la posibilidad de la imposibilidad, la muerte es la imposibilidad de la posibilidad, y el hombre, más que ser-para-la-muerte, es ser-contra-la-muerte. La finitud adquiere así un nuevo sentido, en el que la muerte de los otros marca la orientación ética de la que carece la ontología fundamental. The analysis of finitude that Heidegger held in his earlier work has being questioned by Emmanuel Levinas in his ethics of otherness, which involves a new aproach to subjectivity, the relationship with others and the opening of time. We will show that in the work of E. Levinas the reflections on time are preceded and conditioned by the encounter with the otherness of another man (Autrui), that in the diachrony of his break set up the temporary experience as unassumable in the present of representation. There for, death as origin of time and the privilege of future in the work of Heidegger is denied: death is the impossibility of possibility, and man, rather than a being-towards-death, is a being-against-death. The finitude acquires a new meaning in the death of the others, that highlights the ethical orientation which fundamental ontology lacks. (shrink)
