Investigating the neo-Kantian origins of structuralism and culturalism, this article analyses the development of Cassirer's thought by following his intellectual progression from knowledge to culture, and from culture to praxis. The article is in two parts. In the first part, the author presents an analysis of Cassirer's relational conception of knowledge. In the second part, the critique of knowledge is superseded by a critique of culture. The author analyses Cassirer's anthropological philosophy of symbolic forms and critically compares it to Simmel's (...) vitalist theory of culture. The article ends with a plea for a practical sociology inspired by Cassirer's return to Kant's practical philosophy. (shrink)

En el presente trabajo se reflexiona el proceso de construcción del autoconocimiento propuesto por Ernst Cassirer. El objetivo es identificar la tensión entre la vida y espíritu como su antítesis básica y a las mediaciones simbólicas como el recurso cultural que posibilita la formación de un autoconcepto. A través de una revisión crítica de la Philosophie der symbolischen Formen y An Essay on Man, se sostendrá que, i) el autoconocimiento es un proyecto tríadico que integra cada fase previa, ii) que (...) requiere una investigación funcional de la obra y cultura humana para iii) sostener una tensión que distingue sin separar al agente como ser vivo y su autoconocimiento como un producto espiritual. This article discusses the question whether or not Cassirer’s philosophical critique of technological use of myth in The Myth of the State implies a revision of his earlier conception and theory of myth as provided by The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms. In the first part, Cassirer’s early theory of myth is compared with other approaches of his time. It is claimed that Cassirer’s early approach to myth has to be understood in terms of a transcendental philosophical approach. In consequence, myth (...) is conceived as a form of cultural consciousness which is constituted by specific symbolic processes. In the second part, the theoretical assumptions underlying Cassirer’s criticism of myth are discussed and compared with his earlier theory. It is argued that there is a strong conceptual and theoretical continuity between Cassirer’s early views on myth as a symbolic form and his later critique of technological use of myth. (shrink)
