Feminist metaphysics is guided by the insight that gender is socially constructed, yet the metaphysics behind social construction remains obscure. Barnes and Mikkola charge that current metaphysical frameworks—including my grounding framework—are hostile to feminist metaphysics. I propose a functionalist theory of grounding: f-grounding. Specifically, I argue that grounding is a second-order phenomenon that is realized by relations that play the non-causal explanatoriness role. I also show that f-grounding can deal with a recent and powerful challenge. The theory of explanatory unificationism has been recently appealed to (Kovacs 2017: sec. 5; 2020: 1; Baron & Norton 2020: 3) to argue that successful non-causal explanations do not require backers in the form of grounding relations. I start off by discussing some simple formulations, based on the ideas that social facts are always either full or partial grounds of legal facts. Roles remain nebulous entities, notwithstanding their extensive interdisciplinary research. This paper argues through a meta-ontological conceptual tool of grounding that there are three key facets of roles: a role position, a role specification, and a role potential.
