The present paper is an attempt to explore the impact of Karl Popper's ideas on the views of a number of intellectual groups in post-revolutionary Iran. Throughout the text, we have tried to make use of original sources and our own personal experiences. One of the distinctions that Plato in the Laws stresses most heavily in his discussion of the proper relation between the individual citizen and the laws of the city is that between persuasion and compulsion. Law, Plato believes, should try to persuade rather than compel the citizens. The author characterizes the model of rationality devised by critical rationalism in opposition to the classic model of rationality and as an alternative to this. He illustrates and criticizes the trichotomous theory of knowledge which, going back to Max Scheler, is received in a secularized version by Habermas and Apel, also under the influence of the hermeneutic tradition of Heidegger and Gadamer and of the so-called “critical theory” of Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno. Karl Popper is famous for having proposed that science advances by a process of conjecture and refutation. He is also famous for defending the open society against what he saw as its arch enemies – Plato and Marx. Popper’s contributions to thought are of profound importance, but they are not the last word on the subject. They need to be improved. V prispevku se najprej analizira Popperov poskus razmejitve znanosti in metafizike. Ugotovi se, da Popperov kriterij demarkacije - ovržba - ne omogoča upravičbe želene delitve, ker je rezultat zelo nepričakovan. Na isti strani so matematika in logika, teorija indukcije, različne metafizične teorije in filozofija. Ovržba lahko funkcionira kot kriterij razločevanja le v horizontu ločevanja stavkov empiričnih znanosti od stavkov, ki empirični znanosti ne pripadajo.
