Although the cinematic medium can be used in philosophically valuable ways, bold contentions about how films 'do philosophy' in an independent, innovative and exclusively cinematic manner are highly problematic. Philosophers' interpretations of the stories conveyed in cinematic fictions do not actually support such bold claims about film's independent philosophical value; nor do they offer adequate appreciations of the films' artistic value. My thesis is a work of creative non-fiction, in the form of an introductory, philosophy workbook. The workbook, tentatively named Everyday Philosophy, is intended to appeal to upper secondary students aged sixteen to seventeen, and contains a broad cross-section of information about the philosophy tradition. The workbook is loosely constructed around the new Western Australian Certificate of Education 'Philosophy and Ethics' curriculum, due to be launched in 2008. The study analyzes relations between memory, identity and reality erosion in Paul Verhoeven’s film ‘Total Recall’. Paul Verhoeven intentionally makes his film a text open to the greatest variety of independent interpretations and not restrictive in meaning in order to render reality erosion prima facie within the mind of the film’s main character Douglas Quaid portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The correspondence between the themes of identity and self-knowledge developed in Mozart’s operas with the inner intentions of the composer’s life way is demonstrated. This paper aims to understand the Pragmatism way of thinking in the practice of education. As a case study, Riri Reza's Laskar Pelangi is used to find out how Pragmatism practices in education in Indonesia.
