    J. M. Bernstein argues that to capture the depths of the harm of torture, we need to do away with the idea that we possess intrinsic and inviolable worth.     There is a decided consensus that Kantian ethics yields an absolutist case against torture – that torture is morally wrong and absolutely so. A common objection against the practice of penal torture is that there is something about penal torture that makes it wrongful, while this is not the case for other modes of punishment.
