Born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Medard Boss was educated at the University of Zurich and served in many capacities, ranging from staff psychiatrist to head psychiatrist at many hospitals and clinics in the Zurich area. He was appointed professor of psychotherapy at the University of Zurich's medical faculty in 1954 (he is currently emeritus) and has been in private practice since 1935. During his career, Boss was closely associated with Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Eugene Bleuler, H. W. Maier, Ludwig Binswanger, and Martin Heidegger. In addition, Boss has taught and has been therapist for numerous psychotherapists throughout the world. He founded the Institute for Daseinanalytic Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics in Zurich in 1971, which is based on his own synthesis of Heidegger's concept of being and Freud's psychoanalysis.
