In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

  • The Gildersleeve Prize for the Best Article Published in the American Journal of Philology in 2007 Has Been Presented to Timothy M. O'Sullivan
  • William M. Breichner

for his contribution to scholarship in “The Portico Frame of the Odyssey Landscapes,” in AJP 128, no. 4:497–532.

In this article, O’Sullivan examines the Odyssey Landscapes in the widest possible context—artistic, literary, philosophical, and cultural in general—to show how, with their portico frame, they would have evoked in the spectator the contemplative ambulatio that played such a role in Hellenized Roman otium. The article not only shows these famous frescoes in entirely new lights but also suggests many ways in which they in turn throw light on their time. This is truly and deeply interdisciplinary work, and its organization, moving from close and careful analysis of the artifacts and of past scholarship to new and broad interpretations of the Odyssey Landscapes, happily parallels O’Sullivan’s demonstration that the organization of the frescoes themselves has a clear narrative trajectory, a sense of opening up new vistas as we move through and beyond the sixth painting. This article should become a reference point not only for the Odyssey Landscapes but also for a host of the related topics it touches upon. Beyond its specific themes, it provides a model for bringing art and literature fruitfully to bear upon each other. Last but not least, for all its erudition and sophistication, the article is written in such a way that any intelligent reader—classicist or not—can understand and enjoy it.
