성리학과 덕윤리학

‘수기’(修己)와 ‘사적(私的) 윤리’의 대비를 중심으로

이 글은 성리학의 수기치인론과 현대 덕윤리학의 사회철학적 관점에 주목하여, 삶의 개인적 측면과 사회적 측면에 관한 양자의 입장을 알아보는 데에 목적이 있다. 성리학의 수기치인론에 따르면, 수기는 치인 이전에 갖추어야 할 조건 또는 ‘근본’이며, 치인은 수기가 사회적 사태에서 표현되는 ‘지말’이다. 치인에 수반되는 마음가짐은 수기에 의하여 갖추어지는 것인 만큼, 개인의 심성함양을 위한 활동으로서의 수기는 치인에 해당하는 활동, 즉 사회적 삶을 이루는 모든 활동이 따라야 할 기준이 된다. 서양의 현대 덕윤리학은 자유주의 사회에서의 공적 윤리 범람과 개인적 삶의 영역에서의 윤리의 공백을 문제 삼으면서, 칸트로 대표되는 법칙윤리학에 대한 대안으로서 덕윤리학이 가지는 의의를, 공적 법칙이나 규칙이 영향을 미치지 못하는 사적 영역에서 개인의 행복 또는 풍요로운 삶의 추구를 위한 방향을 안내하는 ‘사적 윤리’라는 관점에서 규정한다. 개인의 사적 자유와 사회의 공적 이익을 대등하게 존중하면서, 양자 사이의 조화와 균형을 추구하는 서양적 사고방식은 성리학에서 사적인 것과 공적인 것의 구분이 차원에서의 차이를 의미하고, 사적 욕망을 초월한 공적 표준을 추구하는 심성함양의 삶에서 사회적 삶의 기준을 찾는 것과 극명하게 대조된다.

The purpose of this study is to clarify and compare the views of Neo-Confucianism and modern Western virtue ethics concerning the relation between personal life and social life. According to Neo-Confucian idea of ‘self-cultivating’ [修己] and ‘governing-others’ [治人], the former is the root or inner foundation of the latter as its terminal manifestation. Inasmuch as the state of mind which is accompanied with one’s social life is what has been formed through his self-cultivating life, personal ‘self-cultivating’ is to be regarded as logical condition prior to, and normative standard above ‘governing-others’ in social situations. Recently, virtue ethics theorists have diagnosed one serious problem of Western modern liberalistic approach as the blank of ethics for personal life and spillover of public ethics to private sphere. Thus, they try to explain the significance of virtue ethics in terms of ‘personal ethics’ which can guide individual s happiness or flourishing life, as the alternative to rule ethics effectual only for public realm such as Kant’s deontological ethics. This way of thinking oriented to a balance between private freedom and public goodness is sharply contrasted with Neo-Confucian view in that ‘the public’ and ‘the private’ represent two different dimensions, and personal self-cultivating life pursuits to control private desires and conform to public unmanifested standard.
