고대 그리스의 서사시와 비극에 나타난 운명 개념에 대한 분석을 통해 철학적 논의의 단초를 발견하고 그리스 철학의 주요 논의와의 연속성을 밝히는데 주요 목표가 있다. 그러나 고대 그리스의 운명 개념 자체가 매우 포괄적이기 때문에 가장 근본적인 특징들을 중심으로 분석해보고자 한다. 첫째, 그리스 서사시와 비극에 나타나는 운명 개념은 공간적 이미지와 시간적 이미지로 구분할 수 있다. 그리스에서 운명은 일차적으로 ‘몫’(moira)을 의미한다. 운명의 여신들은 모든 것의 고유한 영역이나 지위 및 특권을 할당하는 존재로 공간적 이미지를 가지고 있으며, 모든 것의 시작과 관련되며 운명의 여신들은 과거와 현재 및 미래를 관장하는 존재로 시간적 이미지를 가지고 있다. 둘째, 그리스 서사시와 비극에서 운명은 강력한 힘을 가진 존재로 필연적인 특징을 가지고 있다. 그러나 서사시시대에서 비극 시대로 넘어가면서 자아의식이 발달되면서 운명의 필연성에 대한 개념이 약화되는 경향을 보인다. 그렇지만 운명의 원인이나 설명방식이 달라지는 것이며 운명을 완전히 피하기는 불가능한 것으로 인식하였다. 셋째, 고대 그리스의 운명 개념은 일차적으로 법 또는 관습(nomos)와 밀접한 관계가 있으며 항상 되갚는 '복수'의 여신과 연관된다. 나아가 복수는 모든 것을 올바르게 하기 때문에 '정의'의 여신이 밀접한 관계가 있다. 넷째, 그리스 서사시와 비극의 운명개념에 나타나는 철학적 계기로서 한편으로 자기 인식의 문제와 연관하여 각자의 몫을 알아야 하며 그 한계를 넘어서게 될 때 오만을 범하고 개인뿐만 아니라 공동체도 파국에 이르게 할 수 있다. 다른 한편으로 자기 돌봄과 관련하여 삶의 고난과 역경을 극복하기 위한 탁월성과 행복과 밀접한 연관이 있다.

It is a mixture of good luck and bad luck; whatever is excessive can overflow to bad luck or misfortune. Furthermore, fate is associated with the distribution of shares and the law of nature. The 'distribution' (dianomas) of one’s share is related to 'justice' (dike) and 'revenge' (nemesis), and also to the rule of the order and the law of nature in the universe. Law (themis) is associated with rule (nomos) and nature' (physis). Finally, when humans go beyond their share or limit (hyper moira), they are brought to a catastrophe in connection with 'arrogance' (hybris). Based on the concept of destiny in Greek epics and tragedies, two philosophical concepts can be examined. First, the problem of 'self-awareness' is raised, and is related to the concept of 'justice' and 'arrogance'. If fate is a share given to each person, and if he knows what it is, he can control his destiny. Thus, 'knowing yourself' in Greek philosophy is very important in relation to the justice of the individual and the national community. Second, it raises the question of 'self-care', and is closely related to the concept of 'virtue' or 'arete'. Man does not know his destiny. So human beings are forced to face various kinds of luck. The ancient Greeks took an attitude of 'patience'(tlemosyne) towards fate, but they need to train virtue to overcome suffering and adversity.
