『사고제요(四庫提要)』는 『사고전서(四庫全書)』의 해제 형식으로 편찬된 일종의 해제 자료집이다. 이 책의 편찬은 청초 학술의 성격 변화와 한학(漢學) 존중의 기풍을 추동했다는 점에서 매우 중요한 학술사적 의의를 지닌다. 즉 『사고제요』의 편찬이라는 사건은 훈고와 고증 중심의 한학(漢學)의 부흥과 발전이라는 청대의 학술사조 형성에 결정적인 계기가 되었다. 본 논문은 『사고제요』에 기록된 송학(宋學)과 한학(漢學)의 대립에 대한 관점, 그리고 한학 중심의 연구방법을 지향하는 『사고제요』의 논리를 밝힘으로써 청대 학술에 끼친 『사고제요』의 역할과 학술사적 의미를 밝히고자 하였다.
『사고제요』를 분석해보면, 이 책은 단순한 해제의 성격을 뛰어넘어 그 속에 편찬자의 학문관이나 사상적 주장을 강하게 투영하고 있기 때문에 그 자체가 하나의 학술적 논문의 성격을 띤다. 이 책에서는 한학(漢學)의 존숭과 송학(宋學)의 경시라는 자세와 한학의 연구방법이 경전의 이해와 독해를 위한 최선의 방법이라는 학문관을 강하게 주장한다. 이러한 학문관은 국가권력의 후원과 절대적인 지지 하에 청대 학술의 방향성을 결정하는 강력한 힘으로 작용하였다. 그 결과 『사고제요』의 연구방법은 학술 분야 전반에 파급됨으로써 청대 학술은 한학 중심의 실증적이고 고증적인 학문이 핵심적인 학술사조로 자리잡게 되었다.
SaGoJeonSeoChongMokJeYo (四庫全書總目提要) is a kind of guide book, which was compiled in guiding form of SaGoJeonSeo (四庫全書). Compilation of this book has a very important meaning in academic history at the point that it promoted the change of academic character and the stream of respecting the Study of Han early in Ching dynasty. That is, the event of compilation of SaGoJeYo played a key role in formation of the academic stream of Ching dynasty that was revival and improvement of the Study of Han focusing on exposition and study of ancient documents. In this study, I tried to find out the role and academic historical meaning of SaGoJeYo that influenced the academic stream in the era of Ching by looking into the viewpoints on the opposition between the Study of Song and the Study of Han recorded in SaGoJeYo and the logic of SaGoJeYo that was toward the study method focusing on the Study of Han. Analysis of SaGoJeYo indicates that it strongly reflects its compilator's viewpoint of learning and ideological arguments in itself beyond simple character of guidance, so that it looks like an academic article itself. That is, SaGoJeYo strongly claims the viewpoint of learning that the study method in the Study of Han must be the best way to understand and comprehend the scriptures showing the attitude of respecting the Study of Han and neglecting the Study of Song. Such viewpoints of learning played a strong power to control the direction of the academic stream during the era of Ching under the sponsorship and absolute support of government power. As a result, the study method of SaGoJeYo spread entirely in the academic field and then the academic stream was made mainly of practical and ancient documents study learning focusing on the Study of Han during the era of Ching.
