본 논문은 성호 이익의 제례에 관한 저술인 「제식(祭式)」의 내용을 분석함으로써, 제례의 행례 과정에서 이익이 추구했던 예의 정신과 실용적인 의례관을 고찰한 것이다. 이익은 『가례』가 사대부를 대상으로 하는 의례이므로, 서인들을 위한 ‘서인가례(庶人家禮)’의 필요성을 주장했다. 이익은 『가례』가 의례 실천의 기준이 된다는 점은 인정했지만, 이를 의례의 절대적인 기준으로 보려는 당시의 관점은 비판했다. 이에 『가례』를 기준으로 하면서도 『가례』에 얽매이지 않고, 당시 조선의 현실에 알맞은 실용적인 의례의 정립을 추구했다.
「제식」은 『가례』를 기준으로 고례와 시속을 참고했으며, 나름대로 근거를 가지고 실용적인 제사의례를 정리한 저술이다. 서인을 대상으로 했기 때문에, 사대부가에서 사당을 설치하여 지내는 시제(時祭)와 선조제 등은 제외하고 기제⋅묘제⋅참례만을 다루었다. 이익은 제례는 정성을 다하여 조상과 감응(感應)하는데 그 이치가 있으므로, 현실의 경제적인 상황에 맞추어 정성을 다하는 것이 더 중요하다고 보았다. 이에 서인의 경우에는 관직이 있으면 2대를 제사 지내고, 관직이 없으면 고비만 제사 지내도 무방하다는 견해를 보였다. 특히 제찬의 품수와 종류에 대해 구체적으로 고증하여 제시했는데, 이는 제찬의 준비가 경제력이라는 현실적인 문제와 직결되기 때문으로 생각한다. 이처럼 이익의 예학에는 실용성을 추구하는 실학자로서의 면모가 그대로 반영되어 있다.

Lee-Ik argued for the need for Seoingarye for the ordinary people, as the Zhu-Xi`s Family Rituals are a ritual for the nobility. He acknowledged that the Zhu-Xi`s Family Rituals was a standard for practice, but he criticized the view that other people see Zhu-Xi`s Family Rituals as an absolute standard. So, based on the Zhu-Xi`s Family Rituals, he established a practical rite suitable for the reality of Choson Dynasty. Jesik is a book that refers to the ancient rite and the custom of the rite based on the Zhu-Xi`s Family Rituals, and summarizes practical Ancestor-memorial ceremony. He believed rhat it`s more important to do your best with the real economic situation to Ancestor-memorial ceremony. So, He suggested that the ordinary people should only held Ancestor-memorial ceremony to their parents or only their grandparents. As such, his studies reflect the practicality of a scholar.
