KNOWLEDGE, TRUTH AND PHILOSOPHY. THE MODAL PERSPECTIVISM OF STEVEN HALES AND ITS PLACE IN THE PRESENT DISCUSSIONS ON COGNITIVE RELATIVISM Abstract: The author aims at showing the arguments provided by Steven Hales in his book Relativism and the Foundations of Philosophy defending global relativism against the charge that it is self-refuting, and so, demostrating that relativism is a consistent philosophical doctrine. We take up Hales’ methods and outcomes, locating them in the plural landscape of present relativism and assessing them. We’re deeply awaked of this fact: his original and thorough scrutiny (founded in modal logic) raises the old question of relativism to a conceptual level much better than the preceding ones. Key words: Foundationalism - Hales - Knowledge - Modal Logic - Pragmatism Rational Intuition - Relativism - Skepticism - Truth - Wittgenstein.
