Miglio's Political Quest

Gianfranco Miglio, Le Regolarità della Politico (Milan: Giuffé Editore, 1988), 2 volumes, 1104 pp.

Abstract

A collection of essays and speeches produced since 1942, this anthology bears witness both to the learning and the analytic sharpness of its author. Edited by his students, it underscores Miglio's journey from an advocate of a reformed Italian state to a Lombard regionalist and architect of the Lega Nord. Now in his seventies, this longtime professor of government at the Catholic University of Milan has reaffirmed his own Lombard roots both culturally and politically. At least half of the more than 1,200 pages in this collection present Miglio's evaluations of two conspicuous failures in the attempt at building a credible Italian state — one in the 1860s and the other after the fall of fascism.
