Abstract In the essay the author wants to present an issue of Christian freedom in thought of Berdyaev and the work of Dostoyevski. He proposes a certain philosophical perspective to grasp the problem of freedom. The perspective relies on a metaphilosophical term freedom-from-abyss. The perspective consists in referring to a specific experience which he called as descending to abyss (descensus ad inferos). He determines the experience as “a transition by nothingness and despair (madness).” From the experience grows up work of Berdyaev and Dostoyevski. Another important element of the perspective is consideration of the problem of freedom on basis of the theories of freedom by Kant, Schelling and Nietzsche.
The author tries to approach the issue of freedom in the thought of Berdyaev and the work of Dostoyevski as a certain drama of freedom. The drama consists in dialectics of an idea of Godman (freedom in God) and an idea of mansgod (freedom of choice of good and evil).
Three main conclusions are coming out from the considerations of the author. Firstly, Berdyaev and Dostoyevski with prophet intuition saw a threat from a side of many kinds of atheistic ideologies of mansgod. These ideologies later became an important part of totalitarian systems (communism and nazism). Secondly, they believe, that contemporary epoch does not have to end in catastrophe, unless people open to Godman freedom. Thirdly, at last, for both of them Christian Godman freedom is seen as a life rooted in beauty and creativity and these two values has got salvation power.
Ultimately, the author believes that in visions of Berdyaev and Dostoyevski, a man appears as a free spirit, whose lasting goes beyond a temporarily dimension of reality.
