The Relationship between Personality and Knowledge Implied in Jacques Maritain’s Theory of Personality

마리탱의 인격 이론은 지식을 통하여 인격을 함양하는 것이 어떻게 가능한가를 설명하려는 시도로 해석될 수 있다. 마리탱이 보기에 인격은 인간에게 내재한 신적 본성으로서 그 자체가 인간다운 인간을 사정하는 일종의 기준이며, 지식은 인간다운 인간이 되려는 정서적 열망의 표현이다. 지식이 인격 함양을 위한 통로로서의 지위를 확보하는 근거는 마리탱의 용어로 ‘정신의 전의식’에 있다. 정신의 전의식은 명시적인 개념 또는 판단의 이면에 깔려 있는 정형화되지 않은 정신적 역동성으로 ‘실재와 일치하려는 열망’을 가리킨다. 지식은 표면상 개념이나 명제의 형태를 띠고 있지만 정서적 열망이 자리 잡은 전의식에 그 뿌리를 내리고 있다. 따라서 지식을 전달한다는 것은 언설로 표현된 지식의 표면적 의미를 이해시키는 것 이상으로 실재와 일치하려는 열망을 학생 자신의 것으로 받아들이게 하는 것을 포함한다. 이것을 위해서 요청되는 것이 ‘교사의 기예’이다. 교사는 스스로 정서적 열망의 구현체가 됨으로써 언설로 표현된 지식을 전의식 차원으로 되돌리는 일을 수행한다.

The cultivation of personality is possible through the transmission of knowledge. In Jacques Maritain s view, knowledge could serve as the path of cultivating personality by virtue of the preconscious . The preconscious is a spiritual dynamism beneath the apparent surface of explicit concepts or judgements and a desire to correspond with the reality. Therefore, cultivating personality through knowledge means accepting the desires as their own, rather than understanding the meaning of concepts and propositions. A prerequisite for cultivating personality is teacher s art which makes the knowledge as explicit concepts or judgements into the knowledge as the preconscious . It means that a teacher should reveal personality of his own. Maritain s theory of personality contributes to understanding that the ultimate aim of moral education should be prescribed at the metaphysical-religious level, beyond the empirical level. Moreover, his theory can shed light upon understanding teacher s role in moral education and the nature of moral education as a school subject by presenting how teachers contribute to the cultivation of personality through knowledge.
