Extract

In 2007 I published the first part of some manuscript notes on the text of Menander Rhetor, which I attributed to F. Jacobs (1764–1847). I now present the second part of these notes, alongside a global assessment of all the coniectanea and corrections by F. Jacobs on the text of this rhetor.

2 Philologisches Schriftsteller-Lexikon (Leipzig, 1882 [Darmstadt, 1966]), 259. On p. 130 there is some information about the life and work of F. Jacobs, although more is given in K. Regel, Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (ADB) (Leipzig, 1881), 13.600–12. None mentions these manuscript notes on Menander rhetor. I was not able to find them at the University and Forschungsbibliothek Erfurt/Gotha, where the legacy of F. Jacobs is currently preserved. My research has been carried out as part of project ‘Greek manuscripts in Spain and their European context’ ([II]FFI2015-67475-C2-2-P). I would like to express my gratitude to Dr Alberto Quiroga and Dr Álvaro Cancela for their valuable assistance in reviewing this paper, and to Dr Olivia Cockburn for revising the English text.

6 The page number that appears at the beginning of each note in the manuscript refers to Heeren's edition, which is the edition used by Jacobs in his manuscript. In the commentary that I have added after the edited manuscript, I have provided the modern equivalents of these references in the Russell-Wilson edition to ensure that each passage can be located easily.
