초기의 대승경전인 반야경에 이르게 되면 다라니(陀羅尼)라는 새로운 용어가 명주를 대신하여 사용하게 된다. 하지만 주(呪)가 지니는 호신이나 제재초복 등의 기능은 사라지고 대승경전의 내용을 문지(聞持)하고 억지(憶持)하는 기능을 갖게 된다. 그리고 이러한 기능은 삼매를 얻고 정각을 얻는 것으로의 기능을 더하게 되고, 42자문과 같은 중기밀교 경전의 종자자(種子字)를 예상하는 언급이 있게 된다. 화엄경에는 이러한 문지와 억지의 다라니의 기능에 중생교화를 위하여 법사를 수호하는 기능이 첨가된다. 그리고 대승의 신앙적인 면이 강조되는 법화경에 이르게 되면 별도의 다라니품이 첨가되고 법사를 옹호하기 위한 진언형태의 주구(呪句)가 나타나며, 다라니주(陀羅尼呪)로서의 기능을 갖게 되면서 밀교진언으로의 전개여지를 남기게 된다. 이런 점에서 초기 대승경전인 반야경, 화엄경, 법화경에서 다라니와 관련된 부분을 순차적으로 살펴보고 다라니 기능의 다양한 변화과정을 비교해 봄으로써 중기밀교 경전에 나타나는 진언의 성립에 대한 과정을 살펴볼 수 있었고, 밀교 수행의 중심에 해당하는 진언의 성립과정을 밝힐 수 있었다.
The ascetic exercise method of Esoteric Buddhism consists of the Three Secrets, of which the Mantra is the most important one among them. The Mantra is derived from the Vedas of ancient India. After the concept of the Mantra was incorporated into Buddhism, it was refined into Buddhistic terms during the Early Buddhistic or Theravada Buddhistic periods, and it was expressed as the Vidya related to the wisdom of Buddhism. Since it has mysterious power inside, it has been translated into Vidya-Mantra having the functions of the Mantra. In the Prajňāpāramitā sūutra which is the early Mahayana Sutras Scripture, the new term dhāraṇī has been used instead of the Mantra. However, the function of the Mantra for self protection has disappeared but the function of ignoring and restraining the contents of the Mahayana Sutras scripture instead, and the function of obtaining the samādhi is added. It also has a comment anticipating the bija-Mantra of the Middle Esoteric Scripture like the 42 Letter Book. In the Buddhāvantamsaka-sũtra, the function possessing supernatural power for human enlightenment and the function protecting the Dharmabhāṇaka have been added to the ignoring and restraining function of the Dhāraṇī. Specially in the Saddharma-puṇḍarika-sũtra which focuses on religious aspects of the Mahayana Buddhism, the Dhāraṇī chapter has been incorporated, and the Mantra to protect Buddhist priests has been shown in. Since it has the function of Dhāraṇī-Mantra, there is a great potential for it to develop into the Mantra of Esoteric Buddhism.
