인간은 사랑과 성을 분리하여 전자는 정신적 과정으로, 성은 육체적 생리적 과정으로 설명한다. 그러나 마굴리스에 따르면 온갖 생명체가 성을 수행하는 방식을 보면 정신적 과정이라 부른 형식의 사랑을 신체적으로(성적으로) 수행하고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 말하자면 우리가 정신적이라 부르는 현상도 알고 보면 신체적 과정에 기초한 것이고 신체적 과정은 근본적으로는 물리-화학적 과정이라는 것이다. 정신적 과정은 플라톤에 보이듯이 영원성을 지향한다. 그러나 신체적인 과정은 죽음을 필연적인 것으로 받아들인다. 인간은 정신과 육체로 되어 있다. 어떻게 영원성과 죽음이 결합될 수 있는가? 여기에 생명체들에서 이성이 분간하는 종과 개체 간의 삶과 죽음의 다양한 변증법이 존재한다. 그리고 이러한 삶과 죽음의 변증법을 매개하는 것이 사랑이자 섹스이다.
생명현상에서 섹스는 원생생물에서는 이종들 간에 단순한 접합이, 그리고 원핵생물(protist)에서는 이종들 간의 합생이 하이퍼섹스이다. 그러나 고등동식물에서 개체의 DNA의 감수분열에 의한 동종의 이성 간의 섹스가 존재한다. 그리고 직선형 DNA의 감수분열에 의한 섹스를 수행하는 고등동물에서 개체는 반드시 죽게 되어 있다. 고등 동물이란 하이퍼섹스을 수행한 원시 생명체에서의 종들의 합생의 산물이다. 결국 고등동식물에서의 개체에서의 양성에 의한 섹스는 원시적 생명체의 유사분열 방식과 DNA의 감수분열이 중층적으로 복합된 것이다. 그 결과 감수분열에 의한 성이 존재하는 생명체에서는 성이 동종의 관계인지 이종의 관계인지가 잠세태나 유기체의 논리에 따라 복잡하게 얽혀 있으며, 개체와 종의 관계 또한, 동식물계나 균계에서 보이듯이 종이 개체인 듯이 혹은 개체가 종인 듯이 서로 다르게 나타난다.

Among the phenomena of living beings, the sex of bacteria is simply the conjunction of two different species, and the sex of protist is the symbiosis union of different species. But the sex of higher type of living beings which is discovered as the union of different sexes in the same species according to the division and conjunction of DNA, is developed from the ways of sexes of the protist and bacteria. We concluded that the ways of sex of higher living beings are the organization of both the conjunction of bacteria and hyper-sex of protists, on the one hand in the kingdom of animals, on the other hand fungi which is constituted in the reverse organization of collection of individuals. So, according to the evolutionist's theory, human sexes are developed from the way of protist's hypersex to the complex of organized various ways of sexes, which is choosed for the continuity of species in spite of the death of the individuals.
