Additional information

Some of the material in this paper was presented in a seminar on the foundations of subjective probability theory given by Ernest Adams and the Berkeley author in the fall term in 1977. We are grateful to those who participated in the seminar, in particular to Professor Adams and Dr. Roger Rosenkrantz, for ideas and criticisms. We would also like to thank John Vickers for his comments on this paper. Earlier versions of the paper were delivered at the Wake Forest University Physics Seminar (January 19, 1978) and at the University of California Logic Colloquim (February 24, 1978). Research for this paper was supported by a University of California Research grant.
