Mencius’ Political Thought and Education

맹자의 정치사상을 대표하는 개념은 인정(仁政)과 왕도(王道)이다. 인정왕도는 왕이 올바른 통치를 하고 있는가를 판단하는 기준이라고 할 수 있다. 맹자에 의하면 왕이 인정을 펼칠 수 있는 원천은 남의 불행을 차마 보지 못하는 마음에 있다. 이 마음은 인간이라면 누구나 지니고 있는 마음이다. 왕은 이러한 마음에 근거한 정치를 함으로써, 백성의 마음을 얻을 수 있다. 민심을 얻는 것은 곧 천심을 얻는 것이다. 왕이 민심을 얻었는지를 판단할 기준은 왕 자신에게 있다. 왕은 백성들의 삶을 풍요롭게 함으로써 그들이 올바른 마음을 지니도록 해야 하며, 스스로 부족하지 않은지 늘 자신을 살펴야 한다. 그것은 민심을 얻기 위한 왕 자신의 부단한 노력에 의하여 가능하다. 이를 가능하게 하는 것은 군주의 교육이다. 맹자에 의하면 군주를 위한 교육은 왕으로 하여금 대장부의 삶을 지향하도록 하는 것이다.

The representative concept of Mencius’ political thought is benevolent government and the rule of right. They are the standard for judging whether the king is ruling in a right way. According to Mencius, the root source for a king to execute benevolent government and the rule of right is in his own heart of compassion. Such a mind is in any human being. The king rules based in that mind, he wins people’s mind. Winning people’s mind is winning heaven’s. The standard for judging whether a king has won people’s mind lies in the king himself. The king must lead his own people to have right mind by making their lives affluent. This is made possible by the king’s constant efforts to win people’s mind. Education for the king makes it possible. According to Mencius, education directs the king into pursuing a life of a great man.
