Here, the aesthetic theory of Gao Ertai 高尔泰 is examined as a form of resistance to the state-driven collectivization of subjective experience. It is argued th at in post-1949 China aesthetics constitutes a discursive realm in which the experience of beauty confronts the collective sublime at the root of PRC nationalism.
