중관사상과 교과교육

용수의 「근본중송」을 중심으로

본 연구의 목적은 용수의 「근본중송」을 중심으로 하여 중관사상이 교과교육에 주는 시사점과 교과교육이 중관사상에 주는 시사점을 찾아냄으로써 교과교육과 중관사상의 의미를 좀 더 분명히 밝히는 데에 있다. 한 마디로 말하여, 중관사상의 핵심은 흑백논리로 작동하는 인간의 사유 방식의 오류를 지적함으로써 중생으로 하여금 중도에 도달하도록 하는 데 있다. 이것을 실현하기 위하여, 용수는 석가모니 부처님의 깨달음의 핵심인 ‘연기’의 가르침을 토대로 하여, ‘있다’거나 ‘없다’는 식으로 작동하는 인간의 사유 방식 일체를 논리적으로 비판한다. 이 비판은 모든 것을 부정하는 것처럼 보이지만, 따지고 보면 중생을 중도로 이끌기 위한 교육적 조치이다. 교과교육은 해당 교과의 지식을 가르쳐 현상을 있는 그대로 보도록 하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 교과교육의 이 목적은 석가모니 부처님께서 현상을 있는 그대로 보도록 할 목적으로 연기를 가르쳤던 것과 동일하다. 그러나 연기를 언어로 ‘설명’할 경우 이런저런 오해가 발생할 가능성이 있는 것과 마찬가지로, 해당 교과의 지식을 언어로 설명할 경우 교과교육 본래의 목적을 실현하지 못할 가능성이 높다. 그런 만큼 부처님의 가르침을 원래 상태로 되살리기 위하여 용수가 부정의 방법을 사용한 것처럼 교과교육 역시 부정의 방법을 사용할 필요가 있다. 이 방법을 사용하여 현상을 있는 그대로 볼 경우, 교과교육을 받은 사람은 자신의 부족한 점을 늘 인식하고 오만과 편견에서 벗어나려고 노력하듯이, 불교수행을 하여 중도의 마음을 획득한 사람 역시 그러할 것이다. 불교에서 말하는 해탈이나 열반 또한 이러한 경지를 가리킨다고 말할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of subject education and the central philosophy of buddhism. To attain this purpose, this study analyses that the central philosophy of buddhism is the implication for subject education and converse. In short, the central philosophy of buddhism indicates an error of human thinking and let people take central way. To actualize this way, Nāgārjuna criticizes human way of thinking that operates in black and white. This criticism seems to deny everything but actually is the educational measure that let people take central way. Subject education aims to have students see phenomenon as it is, to teach subject matter. This aim is the same that Buddha teaches Dharma. But in that case that Dharma is explained in words, misunderstanding arises. Similarly, it is possible subject matter doesn’t actualize it’s aim. So we need to teach subject matter to use the denial way like Nāgārjuna. In this case students will try to realize their defects and escape from pride and prejudice and so do people that take central way. The spiritual realm of being delivered from worldly existence, in other words nirvana, also is supposed to indicate that state.
