Роберт Кірк: засновник філософських зомбі
Robert Kirk: a Founder of the Philosophical Zombies At first, I shortly analyze the origins of Kirk's zombie argument (I'm talking about Descartes and epiphenomenalism). Then, I analyze his 1974 papers "Sentience and Behaviour" and "Zombies v. Materialists". And, in the end, I conclude that nevertheless Robert Kirk is the founder of a zombie argument and defended the view according to which zombies are logically possible, aftewards he became an "anti-zombist".

Here the author explains in brief the very meaning of the analyzed notions, makes the justification of why he has translated them this way and not another. Also, the author makes a comparative analysis of his translation’s version of the notions mentioned above with the Ukrainian as well as Russian translational traditions. Keywords: mind, perceiving, be awake, there is nothing it is like to be a zombie, supervenience, conceivability, completed physics.

THE OPEN POLITICAL WORLD – THE HIDDEN DEMOCRATIC ETHOS Can the political world be rational? Everybody wants rational politics, i.e., the kind of social behaviour that reflects ideals and goals justified by a public debate. But does it mean that just politics imply that common good is identical with the universal truth, that goodness is the same as knowledge? Is it that obvious that fighting injustice enhances the authority of the intellect in the political world? Plato was the first who clearly articulated the idea of the domination of intellect in society. For him, it amounts to intellectual domination, or the domination of intellectuals. This implies that only those who have and use the true knowledge of the common good should actively participate in rational politics. Therefore, according to Plato, intellectuals (or rather philosophers) should rule. Under our historical conditions, Plato’s formula legitimizes authorities that fully rely on expert knowledge. It is obvious that this formula is ridden with contradictions. Is there expert knowledge of the political world? Is there a straightforward way to distinguish those who are worthy to govern from those who aren’t and how can this kind of differentiation be undertaken without abuse by those in power? The criticism of totalitarianism has proved that the contradictions of Plato’s formula testify to its falsity. However, this kind of criticism often does not reject the formula of intellect’s domination in politics. Critics of “open society’s enemies” usually assume that the domination of the intellect is a matter of public governing, or the governing of publicity. We will call this equality of the intellect’s authority and publicity “Habermas’ formula”, since the interpretation of the openness (Offenheit) of the democratic world as the publicity (Öffentlichkeit) of the intellect is primarily attributed to this prominent social scientist. In this article, I explore the connection between Plato’s and Habermas’ formulas to ultimately show the reasons why the philosophy of intellectual domination fails to fully explain the openness of democracy as a just world. I will use some ideas of the phenomenology of the political world that has been proposed by Klaus Held in his Minsk Lectures (2001). My main proposition is as follows: a democratic society cannot be open if its democratic ethos isn’t hidden (i.e., there is no openness without hiddenness); justice arises from the unity of openness and hiddenness, that is, it is not a product of intellectual argumentation. In our era of globalization this idea may seem fatalistic; however, I see no reason to attenuate it by Held’s idea of the world ethos. Therefore, the phenomenology of the political world should, first of all, define ethos as “pre-political” – if, of course, one wishes to understand politics as the ultimate sphere of the intellect’s use. This question also involves the question of what motivates political communication. However, in this paper, I won’t discuss the will to power or subconscious reasons for subjective actions in politics. Instead, I will focus on ineluctability of the personal and lingual-cultural horizon for political argumentation.
