BCH 134 (2010) Colonialism. Of the third thematic cycle, which is related to colonialism, there are only isolated figurines. On one, the female figure is depicted holding an aquatic bird in her right hand and a key of the Homeric type in her left (fig. 1. j). On another, the figure is portrayed holding crowns (fig. 1. k) 66 indicative of her divine nature, probably dependent on the key. The attribute of Artemis as Kleidouchos is known, and the relevant sanctuaries are near the gates of cities such as Eleusis and Athens. The existence of the bird together with the key in the hands of Artemis alludes also to the city’s colonies. As Mistress of Birds, Artemis through her omens helped colonists select an appropriate site on which to establish a city.

Religious rituals. The fourth thematic cycle is related to the epiphany of the goddess and to her cult rituals and likewise contains just a few figurines of which the most important type portrays Artemis standing in a chariot drawn by hinds and lions-panthers (fig. 1. l). This scene, in addition to an epiphany, suggests ceremonies similar to those that took place in Patras in honour of Artemis Laphria. We know from Pausanias that, besides sacrifices, a procession was held in Patras at which the priestess of Artemis would appear on a chariot drawn by deers. From the above it can be concluded that, during the second half of the 6th and first half of 5th century, the cult of Artemis was very important on Corfu and widespread. A large coroplastic workshop manufactured figurines that were intended for the cult of that goddess. This workshop, despite the various influences it received, created its own style. Its output was large and, in addition to the local market, may have supplied places under Corfiot influence. This is suggested by the figurine moulds that were found in the potters’ quarter, certain types of which have not been found among the figurines unearthed in Corfu to date. This workshop had taken into account the cult of Corfiot Artemis in its production. This workshop is connected with Artemis’ different epliclesis, among which those of Locheia, Kourotrophos, Kynegos, Potnia, Hegemone and Kleidouchos were the most important.

II. 2.
