This paper intends to show the following points, analyzing debates between the Stoics and the Academic Sceptics from the viewpoint of contemporary internalism and externalism. 1) The Stoics contend internalism as regards the origin of sense perception. Therefore, according to Stoics, kataleptike phantasia is true because it has a normal causal history, while ordinary people may not distinguish kataleptike phantasia from abnormal sense perceptions. Nevertheless the Stoics open the possibility of internalism, maintaining that informations for the justification of kataleptike phantasia is accessible introspectively to the professionals (i.e. the sages). 2) The Academic Sceptics asserted that we cannot trace thoroughly the causal history of sense perceptions and that all we have is sense perception. But if the nature of the object of sense perception is incognizable, the sage also has to withhold his opinion about anything or he can at best live on the basis of plausibility. The sceptic arguments were successful in pointing out the difficulties of Stoic epistemology. the Sceptics however faced the problem of isolation, accepting a strong internalism (i.e. coherentism). 3) Philo of Larissa and Antiochus tried to solve the problems of Academic Scepticism as well as to re-interpret the tradition of the Academy. Philo tried to solve the problem of isolation, accepting only the externalistic viewpoint of Stoic epistemology. According to Philo, kataleptike phantasia is true, because it is originated through normal causal history. But all the factors required for the justification of a belief are not accessible introspectively to the subject of sense perception and the knowledge we have is not infallible but fallible. On the other hand, Antiochus broke sharply with Philo and converted to Stoicism, rejecting Philo's innovations. Antiochus transformed the Stoic epistemology, emphasizing internalistic aspects. After all, the debates between Philo and Antiochus became "the Stoics fighting with the Stoics" in that both emphasize some aspects of Stoic epistemology.
