Kuhlmann is not the first to make this general point, though. “Structural mechanism” is very close to what Kuorikoski (2009) calls “mechanism as abstract form of interaction” in contrast to mechanisms as componential causal systems. Also Bechtel and Richardson (2010) discuss mechanisms where interactions between components are more important than the intrinsic features of the components.
