Introduction

Abstract

On July 28, at the age of 81, Herbert Marcuse died in Starnberg, West Germany. People and publications on the left have begun to pay tribute to his memory, and the associates of Telos share in these expressions of grief and gratitude. We are not alone in feeling that none of the customary means of obituary recognition will suffice. We would, for example, like to dedicate this issue of the journal to his memory. Yet, in a real sense, every issue of Telos has been a Marcuse issue. His work was part of the inspiration of the journal's very origins in 1968, and since that time we have continuously confronted and appropriated his ideas and vision.
