고르기아스의 “비존재 또는 자연에 관하여”는 고대 그리스의 합리적 사유 형성 과정에서 특이한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 파르메니데스 이후의 고대 철학은 존재를 중심으로, 그리고 존재에 밀착해 있는 사유를 중심으로 전개되어 왔다고 할 수 있는데, 고르기아스는 위의 토막글에서 이와 같은 조류에 반기를 들고 있다고 말할 수 있다. 그는 존재로부터 벗어날 수 없다는 파르메니데스의 명제에 맞서 아무 것도 존재하지 않으며, 존재와 사유가 동일하다는 주장에 反하여 존재한다고 하더라도 사유로 파악할 수 없고, 인식한다고 하더라도 다른 사람에게 전달할 수 없다는 것을 논증해낸다. 논증에서 주장하고자 하는 바는 물론이거니와 논증의 과정에서도 고르기아스는 파르메니데스와는 전혀 상반되는 사유방식의 가능성, 곧 부정이나 비존재를 향하는 사유의 가능성을 열어 보여준다. 논증(logos)을 통해 의견을 개진한다는 점에서 파르메니데스, 여타의 소피스트, 고르기아스는 같은 배를 타고 있다고 말할 수 있지만 고르기아스가 염두에 두고 있는 로고스 개념이 비합리주의적 색채를 띤다는 점에서 파르메니데스나 다른 소피스트들과는 다른 사유의 길을 걷고 있다고 말할 수 있다.

Gorgias took an objection to Parmenides' way of thought, characterized as Being-centered and the identity of Being and thought. He demonstrated 1. that nothing is, against Parmenides' thesis that it is impossible to escape from Being 2. that though something is, it is impossible to think about it, against Parmenides' identity of Being and thought, 3. that though we can think about it, it is impossible to communicate it with others. In his argument we can find Gorgias' own way of thought which is exactly contrary to Parmenides', eg. the possibility of the thought which is open to negation and non-being. Gorgias belongs to the same camp with Parmenides and other sophists in that he set forth his own opinion through argument(logos). He, however, since his notion of logos takes irrational feature went his own way different from theirs.
