A Shrine of Mars Ultor re-visited

Christopher J. Simpson

In the last few years, several scholars have attempted to throw doubt on the suggestion that there was only one temple of Mars Ultor in Rome. They doubt that the images of shrines on coins from Ephesian and Spanish mints (ca. 19-18 B.C.) commemorate a formal decision of the Senate to erect that temple in a yet-to-be built Forum of Augustus (').

The fact that Augustus built the Forum temple 'in privato solo' (R.G. 21.1) is not relevant to the function of the temple qua consecrated ground. Cf. J. E.
