Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to point out major problems and the possible direction of physical education and sport in universities from the viewpoints of ‘practice’, ‘academics’ and ‘profession’ based on David Best's arguments.
Main points which are presented in this paper are as follows:
1) The position of the field of human movement in universities, i. e., the relationship between this field and degree, should be in two different ways, ‘academics’ and ‘profession’. The nature of degree is quite different in these two.
2) The academic aspect of human movement, i. e., the study of human movement, should be based on the related academic disciplines because of its complexity as the field of study. The practical aspect of human movement as its originality should be considered only in its contribution to the academic aspect. The possible direction of integration of the study of human movement is to theorize the nature of practice, i. e., practical knowledge.
3) The professional aspect of human movement has different value from ‘academics’ and should not be judged from the standard of academic value. At this point the difference between academics and value should be recognized. This aspect is strongly connected to practical performance of teaching.
4) The curriculum of professional aspect should be consisted of three elements, i. e., ‘profession’, ‘practice’ and ‘academics’. In this curriculum, although these three are in complementary nature, ‘practice’ and ‘academics’ should be considered only in their own contribution to ‘profession’ as the integral principle.
5) Direction of the curriculum of professional aspect, i. e., the relationship among these three elements, should be based on the view of body in education.
