Abstract

This is a philosophical investigation of the question 'what is art?' including discussion of Clive Bell's formalism, Collingwood's expression theory, neo-Wittgensteinian accounts of art, and George Dickie's Institutional Theory of art and its descendants. Although partly expository, this book includes original arguments - Jerrold Levinson, for example has described it as including a 'substantial critique' of his Intentional-Historical theory of art.
