Il est urgent de contextualiser les crises sidérantes et les errances politiques du XXIe siècle à l’aide d’une nouvelle approche socio-philosophique du Rapport Meadows. On comprend alors que la limitation des ressources naturelles hypothèque la croissance du capitalisme industriel et financier et qu’elle explique toutes les politiques actuelles, aussi démocratiquement funestes que soi-disant « écologiques ». Il faut, en effet, déplorer que cette crise globale et systémique cinquantenaire n’est généralement pas reconnue comme telle, et que ce n’est dès lors que tangentiellement que les politiques mises en œuvre l’atteignent, illustrant au passage l’antique adage « ex falso sequitur quodlibet » : ce n’est pas parce que les prémisses sont fausses que la conclusion l’est nécessairement. Ce qui est sûr, c’est que l’oligarchie mondialisée refuse obstinément de reconnaître la faillite de son système prédateur.

Un essai philosophique sur l’histoire ne peut que difficilement dépasser l’ambiguïté relevée déjà par Platon : comment établir les faits lorsque les données sont nécessairement lacunaires, lorsque certaines choses qui n’auraient pas dû être oubliées ont été perdues, que l’histoire est devenue légende et que la légende occasionne finalement un mythe ? Quelle méthodologie adopter alors que la réalité humaine est impermanente et que ses événements constitutifs sont eux-mêmes fugaces ? Quelles conclusions tirer dès lors que le futur doit être compris comme ouvert et donc indéterminé ? Finalement, que peut-on définir au juste dans une discipline portant sur l’événementiel ? Et, surtout, le totalitarisme ne se définirait-il pas comme la fin de l’histoire ?

Ce n’est pas une exagération d’écrire que l’idée même de la philosophie, et que l’état de la philosophie, offrent la signature historique d’un Occident d’abord culturellement innovant, ensuite politiquement vindicatif, et, dernièrement, tragiquement moribond.

Il s’agira ici d’identifier les impensés de la philosophie et, plus particulièrement, de montrer comment les vénérables malentendus philosophiques ont finalement composé un chant du signe. L’Ayurvéda propose une philosophie de vie qui articule un vaste système métaphysique (une cosmologie théorique) avec une visée thérapeutique profonde (une anthropologie pratique).

À la croisée de la théorie et de la pratique, on trouve la routine (« dinacharya ») dont le but est
de susciter l’individuation et la solidarité, c’est-à-dire l’autonomie (de chacun) respectueuse de la communauté (de tous). Ce faisant, elle constitue une ascèse dont l’efficacité a été longuement éprouvée et rarement égalée.

Jamais la liberté n’a été aussi instrumentalisée politiquement et aussi urgente à redéfinir philosophiquement. Pourquoi vouloir réfléchir à ce qui se donne dans l’évidence de l’agir et se voile dans les limbes de la pensée ? Parce qu’il y va du sens de l’existence personnelle et que celui-ci offre — ou refuse — une direction collective possiblement démocratique.

S’il est impossible de nier la triple racine culturelle de l’Europe — romaine, grecque, et judéo-chrétienne —, on ne peut pour autant faire l’économie de son passé celtique et de la proximité que celui-ci atteste avec l’Inde.
Philosopher, guérir et sanctifier sont les trois missions traditionnelles que les druides partagent avec les brahmanes ; elles furent aussi celles des philosophes pré-socratiques.
Nos Dialogues sur la voie druidique constituent, à la fois, une introduction généraliste pour le profane et un outil analytique pour l’initié. On y évoque tout particulièrement l’enracinement historique et symbolique du druidisme contemporain et la fonction sacerdotale du druide.

Il s’agira ici de saisir les enjeux de la pratique

selon Georges Devereux (1908-1985) ; la modulation
de la « sécurité ontologique » de ronald D.
Laing (1927-1989) et le devenir de la « syntonie »
chez eugène minkowski (1885-1972). en conclusion,
on reprend la question de l’empirisme radical
en psychothérapie, de l’écoute dans le monde de la
santé, et de l’hystérie de la philosophie.

Comment repenser la sexualité et le « genre » ?
Relire la Genèse et le Prologue de l’évangile de Jean à partir de prémisses féministes donne une idée très vive de la chape idéologique et conceptuelle qui a été coulée sur l’inconscient collectif par les monothéismes, finalement assistés par les catégories philosophiques platoniciennes.
Revisiter le féminisme contemporain à la lumière du sens commun et de la perspective jungienne sur le processus d’individuation permet alors d’en relativiser efficacement les enjeux.

La crise covidienne se poursuit depuis plus d’un an, laissant un sentiment d’inquiétante étrangeté chez chacun. Même si les modalités de l’ « événement Covid-19 » sont saisissantes et spectaculaires, l’interprétation de ses enjeux est possible à l’aide du double impératif qui a été avancé dès les années cinquante : d’une part, il faut bien saisir les tenants et les aboutissants de la crise globale systémique, c’est-à-dire intégrer à la fois la problématique de la croissance infinie dans un mode fini, et la nécessité managériale du totalitarisme (prophylactique ou thérapeutique) ; d’autre part, on ne peut faire l’économie d’une étude des pathologies du pouvoir pour comprendre nos errances culturelles.

La crise de la Covid-19 n’est pas sanitaire, mais politique, et aucune des mesures liberticides n’est fondée scientifiquement ; par contre, la Covid-19 rend évidente la corruption complète du corps politique et de ses appendices médiatiques et scientifiques. Cette corruption reflète la crise du capitalisme financier, et la volonté des oligarques de détruire la démocratie représentative. Le système politique qui se met en place est bien totalitaire, c’est-à-dire que toutes les facettes de la vie des citoyens seront pilotées par une structure idéologique mortifère ne différenciant plus les sphères privées et publiques. Ce totalitarisme sera fasciste, sanitaire et numérique.

Contre le totalitarisme transhumaniste : les enseignements philosophiques du sens commun, Limoges, FYP éditions, 2018.

Le transhumanisme s’impose comme une nouvelle croyance à grand renfort de promesse de jeunesse éternelle et de conférences TED. Il préconise l’utilisation d’innovations technico-médicales, afin d’améliorer les caractéristiques physiques et mentales des humains, pour concrétiser l’espérance prométhéenne : guérir, améliorer, transcender.
Mais quels sont ses fondements idéologiques ? Pourquoi ses partisans veulent-ils l’installer comme une véritable croyance ? Quels sont leurs intérêts et motivations ? Michel Weber montre que même si ce courant de pensée est souvent présenté comme apolitique, une autre réalité se cache sous les prétextes émancipateurs d’outils techniques : la volonté de tout prévoir, de tout anticiper et de tout contrôler. Cette société fondée sur l’hypercontrôle et la maîtrise absolue du cours de nos vies nous plonge encore davantage dans l’hyperindividualisme, sous l’emprise quasi totale de la technologie. Cela conduit à une nouvelle forme de totalitarisme. Le transhumanisme apparaît alors comme l’aboutissement logique d’une doctrine technocapitaliste, terme d’un long processus de destruction des conditions de possibilité de la vie authentique en général et de la démocratie en particulier. Peu connu en francophonie, l’entretien — ou la « pratique » — philosophique est une activité qui plonge ses racines dans l’héritage socratique. Faire l’épreuve de la philosophie, c’est se soumettre à l’exigence de la vie authentique, telle qu’elle pilote un type particulier de dialogue : le dialogue maïeutique, celui qui accouche les âmes. Il s’agit ici de situer les enjeux de la pratique philosophique et d’en établir les fondements, c’est-à-dire de montrer ce qui fait sa spécificité indépendamment des disciplines existant déjà dans le domaine de la santé mentale.

Little known in the French-speaking world, philosophical counselling is a practice that is rooted in Socrates' and Epicurus legacies. The philosophical ordeal, i.e., to put philosophy to the test requires a double event taking place during the dialogue between the philosophical practitioner and the visitor (to use Achenbach's term). On the one hand, the practitioner accepts to have her philosophical standpoint assessed by its maieutic capacity to relieve human suffering. On the other, the visitor endorses in his own way the commitment to authenticity that is specific to philosophical life. This book provides the foundations for a practice primarily inspired by A. N. Whitehead’s organic and processual philosophy as it enforces a radical creativity. Its visionary stance is furthermore confronted with Pierre Hadot’s “spiritual exercises” and its efficacy supported by James’ pragmatism.

L'idéal philosophique incarné par la vie et l'œuvre d’Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947) est, plus que jamais, d'une actualité brûlante. Il requiert que la philosophie soit une discipline vécue afin qu'elle puisse demeurer une discipline vivante. Quel posture socio-politique suggère-t-il ? Le concept d’anarchie permet de nommer à la fois l’état présent du monde globalisé (le « chaos constructif » voulu par le néolibéralisme) et la réponse qui s’impose : le communautarisme libertaire, c’est-à-dire la redynamisation de la démocratie participative. Les études whiteheadiennes françaises — et tout particulièrement la diffusion et l’interprétation de Process and Reality (1929) — ont beaucoup souffert de l’absence d’introductions globales et systématiques évitant à la fois le jargon et les interprétations de l’auteur à partir d’un point de vue qui lui est étranger. La présente duographie vise à combler ce vide. Les deux études qui la composent, dont l’une devait trouver un écho dans Le Pli (1988) de Deleuze, cherchent à extraire la vision whiteheadienne de l'expérience, intégralement comprise.

Procès et réalité (1929) d’A. N. Whitehead (1861–1947) est sans doute l’ouvrage le plus important pour saisir le sens et la portée de la pensée du processus. A l’instar du corpus whiteheadien, la présente introduction procède de manière circumambulatoire, c’est-à-dire qu’elle met en œuvre une série convergente d’analyses contextualisantes. La première partie met en scène le concept de « sensation pure » à l’aide d’un examen contrasté de ses inflexions bergsoniennes et whiteheadiennes. La seconde partie expose l’intuition « systématique » de Whitehead, c’est-à-dire la rationalisation d’un mode relationnel qui rend compte de — et est justifié par — l’intuition pré-systématique. L’objet de ce livre consiste en une éludication croisée de la philosophie organique whiteheadienne et de la gnose thomasienne. Il cherche à répondre à deux questions. On propose ici une ellipse philosophique définie par les deux foyers de l’Art Royal : l’Alchimie et la Franc-Maçonnerie. Ces trois territoires seront de plus recoupés par la psychologie analytique de Jung. Au nombre de nos conclusions, on trouve les thèses suivantes : primo, le Philosophe est l’héritier d’une tradition ascétique et gnostique ; secundo, l’Adepte n’a rien du chercheur d’or et tout du mystique travaillant à sa propre transfiguration ; tertio, l’Initié peut se réclamer de cette filiation philosophico-alchimique qui traverse les œuvres de Pythagore, Platon et Albert le Grand ; quarto, l’Analyste endosse, avec les contradictions qui sont propres à une discipline toujours en quête de notoriété scientifique, ce même héritage.

Quel est le secret de Pythagore ? On pourrait avancer que, par définition, s’il y a secret, il est caché et n’est pas dévoilable, ou ne sera pas dévoilé. Le vrai secret est celui dont on ne soupçonne même pas l’existence. On peut toutefois approcher tangentiellement le cœur du pythagorisme à partir d’un idéal qui a traversé les âges : celui qui est juste et parfait devient digne d’entrer en commerce avec les dieux et de bénéficier de leurs enseignements. Une double harmonie est pour ce faire requise : être juste géométriquement, et intègre moralement, c’est-à-dire, d’une part, faire preuve de droiture et d’équité, et, d’autre part, de sagesse et d’équilibre. En conséquence, on examine ici la métaphysique numérique de Pythagore, sa religion gnostique, et sa morale ascétique.

The question of the nature of time is as old as philosophy itself. Before philosophy, time was not problematized, it was a pure common-sensical matter. There were various experiences of time, and, accordingly, different words to name it. Whitehead’s solution of the temporal conundrum lies in the concept of “creative advance of nature” that is systematically elucidated only in Process and Reality (1929)
To understand the creative advance of nature, one needs to interpret the togetherness of its three aspects —creativity qua concrescence, efficacy qua transition, vision qua initial subjective aim—, and this provides us with the core meaning of time: (i) genuine novelty appears in the World, (ii) past events are, so to speak, ontologically memorized, and (iii) there is an upward trend in terms of “intensity” of events. These three complementary requirements refresh in their own way the Greek triple understanding of time: time is “aiôn,” lived duration (outside physical time) and destiny, but it is also “chronos,” causal time, and “kairos,” timeliness or the appropriate moment for action.

There is one question that any potential reader who suspects that Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947) might be important for past, contemporary, and future philosophy inevitably raises: how should I read Whitehead? How can I make sense of this incredibly dense tissue of imaginative systematizing, spread over decades of work in disciplines so different and specialized as algebra, geometry, logic, relativistic physics and philosophy of science? Accordingly, this monograph has two main objectives. The first one is to propose a set of efficient hermeneutical tools to get the reader started. These straightforward tools provide answers that are highly coherent and probably the most applicable to Whitehead’s entire corpus. The second objective is to illustrate how the several parts of Process and Reality are connected, something that all commentators have either failed to recognise or only incompletely acknowledged.

A good part of what fuels the current boom in consciousness studies is the robust progress of cognitive psychology and neuroscience toward reaching consensus explanations of just about anything except consciousness. Despite hopes that empirical research and computational modeling would constrain theory, it seems that scholarly debate has not so much reached an impasse as remained at one reached in the 17th century. Given the massive effort currently invested in research and debate, the lack of progress towards a general (and generally accepted) theory of consciousness begins indeed to make consciousness look like a kind of 21st century Philosopher’s Stone, whose hidden nature seems to hold the key to the greatest mysteries, but continues to elude us. Accordingly, the present volume taps leading researchers and theorists in the study of consciousness and Whitehead scholars to explore an interface between process thinking and the burgeoning field of consciousness studies. In sum, the rationale for such a project has two main facets: first, the state of an educated debate that seems, first, unproductive and peculiarly burdened by its deep modernist origins; and, secondly, marked more by disciplinary rivalry than interdisciplinary synthesis.

When Rescher’s Process Metaphysics (1996) was published, it was widely acclaimed as a major step towards the academic recognition of a “mode of thought” that has otherwise been confined within sharp scholarly boundaries. The fourth international « Chromatiques whiteheadiennes » conference was devoted to the philosophy of the natural sciences that is characteristic of Whitehead’s « London Epoch ». Continuing the efforts of the Liège (2001) and Louvain-la-Neuve (2003) meetings, the conference focused on An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Natural Knowledge (CUP, 1919/1925) which constitutes Whitehead’s pioneering work in the field. All its main traits — starting with the Method of Extensive Abstraction — are here questioned anew.

The second international « Chromatiques whiteheadiennes » conference was devoted exclusively to the exegesis and contextualization of Whitehead's Science and the Modern World (1925). In order to elucidate the meaning and significance of this epoch-making work, the Proceedings are designed to form a « companion » volume. With one paper devoted to each of its thirteen chapters, the Proceedings aim, on the one hand, to identify the specific contribution of each chapter to Whitehead’s own research program —that is to say, to put its categories into perspective by means of an internal analysis— and, on the other hand, to identify its global impact in the history of ideas.

Texte à paraître, en avril 2022 : « En quête de la gnose anarchiste » in revue Contrelittérature n° 5.

Anarchie, gnose et sagesse posent, respectivement, trois questions essentielles : qu'est-ce que le pouvoir ? ; qu'apporte la connaissance ? ; d'où s'origine l'autorité ? 1 Ces questions ont cristallisé à Rome, lorsque la chrétienté a balayé l'antique panthéon jupitérien et que les hérésiarques gnostiques ont été férocement éliminés. L'Empire Romain reposait politiquement sur une "potestas" militaire dépendant ellemême d'une "auctoritas" transcendante (ancrée dans la religio romana, c'est-à-dire dans un panthéon) et posant la question de l'adhésion à une religion (le fait-on par foi, par connaissance, par contrainte sociale ? ; l'orthopraxie dispense-t-elle de l'orthodoxie ?) 2. C'est l'autorité qui donnait un sens (et des limites claires) à l'exercice du pouvoir. Sans une telle légitimation, l'exercice de la "potestas" n'aurait été que pure violence. La Modernité a transformé ce cadre formel de légitimation en remplaçant la religion-renvoyée au registre du "privé"-par la citoyenneté, la volonté populaire, la souveraineté nationale ou le contrat social.

Philosophy of mind has been crippled, since its very beginnings, by two main prejudices. First, the blind implementation of the traditional Western logical framework, that boils down to Aristotelian logic; second, the perennial neglect of crucially relevant empirical data, in so far as, in most arguments, sense-perception is reduced to sight alone.
We can overcome these crippling effects if we take into account data coming not only from the other external senses, but also from internal senses, as well as what is gathered in altered states of mind — including, of course, the psychedelic state. This completely redefines the limits and possibilities of knowledge, both from the systematical (hence logical) and the empirical points of view.

The aim of this article is to explore the importance of biological and social networks in Whitehead's philosophy. This exploration will involve a consideration of pluridisciplinarity in Whitehead, including a consideration of the relationship between scientific understanding and philosophical thinking, the question of method in Whitehead's thought, and the crucial distinctions between mechanism and organicism and between nature lifeless and nature alive.

To explore a synergy of sorts between Whitehead and Marx is very tempting in the context of the current global systemic crisis. 1 Since Foucault's lecture given at the Collège de France in 1975-1976, the concepts of biopower and biopolitics have been widely discussed in academic and political circles. It seems more to the point here to speak of the need for an organopolitics. In a nutshell, Marx's ideal and pragmatism should be distinguished from Marxism, and preserved, together with his twin concepts of class consciousness and class struggle. His concept of class needs however some new foundations, while his materialism and determinism would be advantageously replaced by panexperientialism and creativity. 2 Nine steps are expedient to probe the stakes and outline the project.

The main bone of contention between A. Huxley and G. Orwell is easy to identify : could or should political power be benevolent. In order to provide a sound answer, three steps are expedient. First, the political contrast drawing a sharp line between Huxley and Orwell is specified. Second, this contrast is shown to be correlated with Huxley's technophilia, as it is the heir of La Boétie and Tocqueville, and with Orwell's technophobia, mainly summoned by the harsh reality of fascist totalitarianism. Third, we evoke the limited way in which Huxley can be said to have changed, in the sixties, his understanding of the relevance of his own dystopia.

« Degrowth: technoscience and the existential stakes of a political heresy », Cosmos and History, Vol. 14, n°3, 2018, pp. 51-71.
-- Three main questions are in order to probe the issue of degrowth. First, we have to make clear that, in the current political context, degrowth is nothing less than a complete heresy. Meadows and Whitehead are precious to specify its weak and strong concepts. On the one hand, degrowth is shown to be inevitable on a finite planet; on the other, technoscience lured by capitalism is necessarily alienating, as it prevents individuation, solidarity, and culture. Second, two forgotten political exemplifications are helpful to picture the practicalities: Cuba’s “special period,” and the Mansholt Commission. Third, the status of technoscience being, arguably, at the very core of the (obvious) vices and (alleged) virtues of the growth religion, a brief Huxleyan speculation on its axiological neutrality helps us to conclude.

The author argues that all temporal (epi-)phenomena are grounded in the fact of a
“creative advance into novelty,” which includes (1) that genuine novelty appears in
the world, (2) that past events do not completely vanish (their ontological status is
changed, lowered, so to speak), and (3) that there is an upward trend in terms of the
“intensity” or “value” of experience.
Five steps structure this paper: a short introduction to Whitehead’s blend of process
thought; a contrasted specification of Whiteheadian creative advance and its three
characters—creativity, efficacy, and vision; and, in conclusion, a meditation on the
question of common sense.

Process thought is arguably the direct heir of Alfred North Whitehead's (1861–1947) late work. His legacy has borne fruit mainly among US-American philosophers endowed with some theological propensity, and especially among (Claremont based Methodist) theologians. What could vindicate new research in the philosophical work of a XIXth century Victorian algebraist? More precisely: what can we still learn from the reading of Process and Reality (1929)? The paper questions the meaning and significance of Whitehead's theory of symbolism from the perspective of (i) Whitehead's philosophical development, of (ii) the argument provided in Symbolism, Its Meaning and Effect (1927), and of (iii) the history of ideas. The argument follows the general structure of the Symbolism lectures: first, the topic is introduced; second, it is analyzed through an ontological lens; third, the uses of symbolism are consequently sketched. Our discussion departs from Whitehead's in this third part, that introduces a humanistic standpoint through five conceptual knots: the distinction between the early (High) and the late (Low) Renaissance, the underground survival of the High Renaissance's values (with Is. Newton and J. Toland), Pantheism (a.k.a. Nature Enthusiasm), Republicanism (or Civic Humanism) and Freemasonry (qua Discrete Fraternity). In conclusion, Whitehead's underground inclination for modernity is underlined.

The Concepts of “Creation”

Although the concept of creation per se belongs to the religious sphere of
revelation and faith, it has received a specific treatment within the philosophical
project, which has factually (if not necessarily) acted as an interface. The purpose of
this paper is to sketch the radical ontological renewal of this question that has been
attempted by the late Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947). More precisely, it lingers
on Process and Reality’s categoreal scheme, acme of his Harvard epoch (1924–1937).

Quelle est la nature du travail ? Oui ou non est‐il le propre du phénomène humain ? Offre‐t‐il vraiment un sens à notre existence terrestre, voire à ce qui pourrait lui faire suite ? Seule une approche anthropologique articulant les éléments historiques et critiques appropriés permet de comprendre son rôle actuel, son histoire, et son futur. Une telle visée (certains parleraient de hauteur de vue) dévoile instantanément les enjeux et dessine l'horizon de l'action politique au XXI e siècle. Si cette visée était cultivée citoyennement, elle indiquerait comment et pourquoi créer les situations qui s'imposent pour tenir grand compte des nouvelles réalités de la guerre des classes. Lorsque Winston Churchill promet à ses concitoyens « du sang, du labeur, des larmes et de la sueur 2 », il ignore probablement qu'au même moment le gouvernement nazi prétend pour sa part que « le travail rend libre 3 ». Son ton oraculaire, quasiment biblique, donne à penser que la condition humaine ne peut s'envisager en dehors des catégories de châtiment et de pénitence. Nous allons le voir, il y a toujours une théologie du travail à l'oeuvre dans les errances historiques de l'homo sapiens. Afin de simplifier la discussion, il était inévitable de se concentrer sur une histoire et il était expédient de penser l'histoire européenne. When philosophy addresses the issue of believing, it always relies somehow on
the antique bipolar “gnôsis / pistis,” that beautifully captures all the major stakes. The
exact origin of the contrast is unclear, just as the cradle of the sects that are brought
together under the umbrella term “Gnostics.” However, a remarkable first instantiation
has (nearly) taken place in Plato, who browsed, and sometimes systematized, all the
concepts he encountered in his inquiries.1
On the other hand, contemporary philosophy
of religion is arguably still relying upon such a contrast, expressed through the prism
of Schleiermacher and James. Let us specify the issue and precize the step of our
argument.

The Humanities have traditionally held an important place in university’s curricula.1 Their import actually used to make all the difference between a university
degree and an institute of technology one. Times have changed. Since the late seventies,
Hayek’s “Chicago School” of economics has fostered a new agenda that basically has no
patience for old‐fashioned cultural issues lacking immediate cash value. Like all other
public organizations, universities had to adapt and their well‐documented
transformation is now almost complete (Newfield 1995, Readings 1996, Woodhouse
2009). Institutes of higher education stand as solid pillars of the “knowledge economy,”
but the more they became attuned to the requirements of the “market,” the less they
could fulfil their initial agenda, which was to contribute to the common good and to
foster personal growth, as well as granting some form of skillful practice.
This paper is made of three main parts. After a short reminder on the current
state of academic affairs, A. N. Whitehead’s (1861–1947) pedagogical vision is sketched,
then his methodological recommendations are introduced, and eventually his emphasis
on “duty and reverence” analyzed.

Cultural relativism is a tricky requirement in philosophy, especially if one seeks to assess the nature of rationality itself.  On the one hand, rationality obviously comes with variegated hues and textures in different cultures, and it has evolved dramatically as cultures were themselves morphing during the ages, oftentimes developing surprising hybrids such as judeo-christianism; on the other hand, if there is something like the unity of the human species—the surrealistically named homo sapiens—, there must be a common denominator to all forms of rationalities. Three approaches are basically possible to probe this question.

In March 1939, when Whitehead publishes an “Appeal to Sanity,” he seems to
wake up from his political slumber. His analysis is dispassionate, even though
he claims to assess his topic with the concept of emotion:
To-day the world is plunged in this second phase of
contagious emotion. […] The point to notice is that war, even if
successful, can only increase the malignant excitement. The
remedy is peace, fostering the slow growth of civilized feelings.
(ESP 53-56)
Strangely, Whitehead further invokes the possibility of a miracle to solve the
crisis. No miracle saved the world from collective insanity in 1939; will history
repeat itself in 2015?

The French reception of Whitehead’s late speculations goes back to 1931, with the research and publications of Émile Meyerson (1859–1933), Jean Wahl (1888–1974) and Philippe Devaux (1902–1979). In France, the work of Wahl anchored the tangentially relevant publications of the more fashionable (but less reliable) Maurice Merleau Ponty (1908–1961) and Gilles Deleuze (1925–1995); in Belgium, the work of Devaux is crucial to understand the discrete Whiteheadian tone of Jean Ladrière (1921–2007) and of François Beets (Université de Liège). Beets is, through Paul Gochet (1932–2011), the heir of Devaux in Liège’s philosophy department. One of the first supporters of the “Chromatiques whiteheadienne” network (2000), Beets has remained over the years a skilled and efficient actor in the process field. So it is no surprise that, while the French Whiteheadian scholarship is still growing, Beets has been a key member of the academic committee of three recent theses.

Trois étapes scandent l’argument : la définition du capitalisme, de son lien avec la technoscience, et l’exploration du rapport historique qui existe entre électroscience et santé mentale.

The paper introduces to the stakes of the shamanic interpretation of the Paleolithic parietal art in five steps: first, it sketches the history of the discovery of Paleolithic cave paintings; second it briefly reviews the scientific vulgate on the matter; then the potentialities of ethnological comparativism are displayed and the overlapping existing between shamanism lato sensu and the homo religiosus ethos perused. In conclusion, we examine WILLIAM JAMES and A. N. WHITEHEAD respective import.

Since the publication of his Kritik der zynischen Vernunft in 1983, Peter Sloterdijk (1947–) is a well-known and rather controversial figure inside, as well as (to a certain extent) outside, academia. The Art of Philosophy, originally published under the title Scheintod im Denken, Von Philosophie und Wissenschaft als Übung (Frankfurt am Main, Suhrkamp, 2010) is the sequel of his You Must Change Your Life (translated by Wieland Hoban, Cambridge, Polity Press, 2013), originally published as Du mußt dein Leben ändern. Über Anthropotechnik (Frankfurt am Main, Suhrkamp, 2009). Both books basically seek to “restore the high status of [philosophical] practice” (p. 6), which means that philosophy should be practiced in everyday life, not remain the privilege of the happy few who happen to enjoy only theoretical speculations. Philosophy is the answer to the question “what is a good life?”—it is not first and foremost an exploration of the meaning and significance of that question. Given the lexicon used by early Greek philosopher, one could add that philosophy should be a secular venture, not a mysticism of sorts, i.e., an ars moriendi, a purification ritual. Sloterdijk thus argues, from the perspective of the radical ethics that emerged with the axial age (Jaspers, 1954), for the “training cultures of antiquity [that] were primarily systems of ethical self-transformation” (p. 8). The book is made of four chapters, of unequal import for the main argument, followed by a Name index.

Guy R. McPherson is Professor Emeritus of Natural Resources and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona. Here is how he introduces himself: “For the better part of a decade, I was the model professor, if only from the standpoint of university administrators. I taught more courses than I was asked, completed more published research than nearly all my peers, and had an active record of service to various mainstream professional entities. Then, realizing I had an obligation to the citizens paying me, I woke up and started doing work of some import. As with most of the students in my classrooms, the citizens didn’t appreciate me, at least not upon initial inspection.” (p. 53) So, on the 1st of May 2009, twenty years to the day after he was hired, “in the wake of considerable angst,” he opted out of Western civilization. (p. 9) Walking Away from Empire chronicles this bold move. The conundrum it addresses is the following: “If we continue to burn fossil fuels, we face imminent environmental collapse. If we cease burning fossil fuels, the industrial economy will collapse.” (p. 15)
