Abstract

Abstract:

This article offers an introduction and overview of ideas about mental representation. Current ideas are introduced from enactivism, connectionism, and symbolic calculation, followed by a historical overview of ideas about mental representation in Western philosophy from Aristotle to our present time, as well as in Buddhism, especially Yogācāra. We can see that ideas that are currently discussed in analytic philosophy, cognitive science, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence have a long history and sometimes have developed independently from each other in different places and cultural contexts.
