Korean culture is often referred to as ‘the culture of emotion(情)’. This means placing importance on moral and ethical sentiments in relationships. However, based on a relationship-oriented life, the culture of emotion(情) faces new problems in modern society. Notably, the shift to a heartless(無情) society is one of the major problems. The heartless society as discussed within this paper can be specified as a conceptual metaphor that sheds light on one aspect of modern society. It takes note of the problem in modern relationships toward alienating 'emotion(情)' associated with the moral and ethical 'good(善)'. This paper is intended to reflect on the essence of Confucianism from a reflective perspective on why a heartless society has emerged. To do so, the preconception that Confucian culture is hierarchical and repressive is an important point because it is a distortion of the nature of Confucianism. Therefore, it is a real problem and needs to be observed in detail. I specifically observed the problems of ‘fake emotions(僞情)’ and the burn-out syndrome. This process is needed for a deeper understanding of difficulties in reality. After such a reflective process, I reinterpreted the meaning of Wi-gi-ji-hak(爲己之學) as an essential healing theory. The foundation for finding the healing aspect of Wi-gi-ji-hak(爲己之學) is the process of learning that starts with respect for one's self. I hope this attempt will serve as an opportunity to re-establish the essence of ‘the culture of emotion(情)’ in modern society.
