The 'Explanatory Gap'
Reply to Derek Allan

AT: "... The focus will be the question: how does the human brain represent the world?"

DA: "I would rephrase it simply as: "what is human consciousness? One (huge) problem at a time..."

AT: "My contention is that the biophysical activity of the brain mechanism that represents the world is consciousness [emphasis added]."

As you can see, from my perspective as a cognitive neuroscientist, your human consciousness is just the biophysical activity of the brain mechanism that represents the world to you. This definition is straightforward and simple, but the implications are very wide and deep. For example, the structural and dynamic properties of the brain mechanism that represents the world can contribute to a better understanding in your own area of specialization -- the philosophy of art.
