Language and words develop generalized senses and lose the original specific meaning they once indicated. Experience, awareness, and consciousness originally had very different connotations, and often very different meanings. Just because in our generalized polyglot please-everyone speech, we have merged their meanings into utter blandness through repeated misuse does not make it impossible to pry the terms apart and make note of their original senses or of their possible new specifications, which would allow us to carry this often-pointless discussion a little further along.
