Within the framework of argumentative semantics, argumentative interpretation takes place using two methods, one of which consists in determining the terms of an "argumentative chaining”, an argumentative discourse used to represent the meaning of an utterance. The aim of this article is to show that in such an interpretation, the context, and in particular the cotext, of the utterance to be interpreted can be exploited in various ways, which leads to rethink the notion of context.

This article proposes a comparative and typological study of predicative demonstratives in French, Mandarin Chinese and Vietnamese. Six class of predicative demonstratives have been described one after another: presentive demonstratives, identification demonstratives, localizing demonstratives, copular demonstratives, manner demonstratives and implicit demonstratives. This research makes it possible to underline the syntactic and semantic characteristics of predicative demonstratives in the three languages, in the sense that they often function as non-verbal predicates without subjects and playing a role of reference or discourse-pragmatics. The study focuses on a specific use of the marker only, namely its use as an inter-clausal and inter-sentences connective marker (allowing clauses or even sentences to be joined together). The syntactic status of only in this use is discussed, in order to determine whether it is a conjunction proper or a linking adverb. Its discourse status is then questioned, by contrasting the properties of a connector with those of a discourse marker. The study also highlights the argumentative dimension of (...) only in this use. Its interpretations in context are also examined, in relation to the host configurations, and then reduced to a common denominator, namely its fundamental value. Finally, the factors leading to the different possible interpretations of only in this use are examined. (shrink)
