    Cybernetyczna analiza zjawiska życia.Andrzej Bielecki - 2016 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 61:133-164.
In this paper the life phenomenon is analysed from cybernetic point of view. The Korzeniewski’s approach is discussed and complemented. The analysis is based on autonomous systems theory and information metabolism theory. Philosophical aspects of the problem are taken into consideration as well.

    Wyzwanie dla racjonalności: Leibniz i początek ery Newtona.Michał Heller - 2016 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 61:5-22.
Our present knowledge in the field of dynamical systems, information theory, probability theory and other similar domains indicates that the human brain is a complex dynamical system working in a strong chaotic regime in which random processes play important roles. In this environment our mental life develops. To choose a logically ordered sequence from a random or almost random stream of thoughts is a difficult and energy consuming task. The only domain in which we are able to do this with (...)

Towards a Formal Ontology of Information. Selected Ideas of K. Turek.Roman Krzanowski - 2016 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 61:23-52.
There are many ontologies of the world or of specific phenomena such as time, matter, space, and quantum mechanics1. However, ontologies of information are rather rare. One of the reasons behind this is that information is most frequently associated with communication and computing, and not with ‘the furniture of the world’. But what would be the nature of an ontology of information? For it to be of significant import it should be amenable to formalization in a logico-grammatical formalism. A candidate (...)

In this publication R. Murawski's anthology of philosophy of computing was reviewed. This review shows that this branch of philosophy is considered as quite new, but it has a long history. Murawski's book is a very good introduction to philosophy of computing - both for IT professionals and students of philosophy.

    Did Morality First Evolve in Homo Erectus?Rappaport Margaret Boone & S. J. Christopher Corbally - 2016 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 61:105-131.
With findings from cognitive science, neuroscience, information science, and paleoanthropology, an anthropologist and astronomer-priest team take a new look at the nature of morality, and suggest parameters that are often very different from the philosophical and theological literatures. They see morality as a biologically-based arbitration mechanism that works along a timeline with a valence of good to bad. It is rational, purposeful, social, and affected by emotion but not dominated by it. The authors examine the age and sex structure, family (...)

Are there brain differences between believers and nonbelievers? In order to investigate the effect of religious beliefs on cognitive control, Michael Inzlicht and his collaborators measured the neural correlates of performance monitoring and affective responses to errors, specifically, the error-related negativity. ERN is a neurophysiological marker occurring within 100 ms of error commission, and generated in the anterior cingulate cortex. The researchers observed that religious conviction is marked by reduced reactivity in the ACC, a cortical system that is involved in (...)

The meeting brought together physicists, cosmologists, mathematicians and philosophers interested in research program called philosophy in science started and popularized by Michał Heller. It is worth noting that the 20 th Cracow Methodological Conference was dedicated to Professor Heller and can be considered as a contribution to the celebration of the 80 th anniversary of his birthday.

    Metoda opisu analitycznego Tadeusza Czeżowskiego – studium historyczno-systematyczne.Maciej Zinkiewicz - 2016 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 61:53-103.
The paper depicts the evolution of the conception of the method of analytical description of Czeżowski, one of the most important figures of the Lvov-Warsaw School of Philosophy. It portrays Czeżowski as an author, whose voice on relation between theory and experience, as well as language and empirical reality, can be still considered important and significant. Generally speaking, Czeżowski distinguishes between two kinds of methods: the inductive ones and the no inductive, i.e. the method of analytic description. The results of (...)

    Emocje negatywne a racjonalność decyzji.Aleksandra Głos & Wojciech Załuski - 2016 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 60:7-33.
The paper provides an analysis of the impact of negative emotions on decision-making processes. It questions the common-sense view that negative emotions diminish rationality of decisions, i.e., increase the probability of making suboptimal choices. It is argued in the paper that this view is untenable on the grounds of neuroscience, cognitive science and evolutionary theory: the results provided by these sciences support the view that negative emotions in most instances of their occurrence, i.e. types of negative emotions, not only fail (...)

    Matematyka w teologii, teologia w matematyce.Stanisław Krajewski - 2016 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 60:99-118.
Mathematicians use theological metaphors when they talk in the kitchen of mathematics. How essential is this talk? Have theological considerations and religious concepts influenced mathematics? Can mathematical models illuminate theology? Some authors have given positive answers to these questions, but they do not seem final. It is unclear how religious views influenced the work of those mathematicians who were also theologians. Religious background of some mathematical concepts could have been inessential. Mathematical models in theology have no predictive value. It is, (...)

    Filozofia matematyki Wacława Sierpińskiego.Katarzyna Lewandowska - 2016 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 60:53-81.
The main aim of the paper was to draw attention to Wacław Sierpiński as not only a great mathematician but also a philosopher. We undertook the attempt of reconstruction of Sierpiński’s philosophy. To aim this goal we mainly based ourselves on Sierpiński’s habilitation lecture entitled _The concept of correspondence in mathematics_. The complementation of Sierpiński’s philosophical views were conclusions from his mathematical achievements, his scheme of research on The Axiom of Choice, and his attitude to this axiom.

“Internal” Problems of Normative Theories of Thinking and Reasoning.Piotr Urbańczyk - 2016 - Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 60:35-52.
This paper provides moderate criticism of so-called normative theories of thinking and reasoning. The discussion focuses on the problems of idealization, adequacy, inconsistent yet non-trivial logics, logical omniscience etc. I called them “internal” to the normative approach, because they stem from the very properties of formal systems used to model these two human activities. Some arguments, however, refer to the current theories in cognitive science, including those which are developed within “descriptive” framework.
