Quattro mura. La casa (e la sua distruzione) nel pensiero di Hannah Arendt.Mirko Alagna - 2022 - Scienza and Politica. Per Una Storia Delle Dottrine 33 (65):127-145.
In Arendt the domestic sphere is the other of the political sphere. In this contribution, however, the house will be described directly. Firstly, by reconstructing some of the different dichotomies included in the macro-differentiation between house and square; secondly by probing the connections and ties that bind house and square. Thirdly, by trying to read the modern emergence of the two poles «society» and «interiority» as a double process of simultaneous expansion and concentration of domestic semantics and domestic performances.

  2. My Private Sky. Le metamorfosi della domesticità e i suoi significati politici nel XX secolo.Gianluca Bonaiuti - 2022 - Scienza and Politica. Per Una Storia Delle Dottrine 33 (65):79-125.
During the 20th century, the format of domestic life became an explicit object of functional reworking and rewriting. Thanks to the industrialisation processes that affected it, the home entered the era of its technical reproducibility, becoming a container aimed at optimising the functions it is called upon to perform. The meanings that were associated with it in the bourgeois tradition of the previous century, first and foremost that of being the place of intimacy and family affection, underwent a significant transformation. (...)

Il domestico e il politico. Sui significati politici della casa.Gianluca Bonaiuti & Silvia Rodeschini - 2022 - Scienza and Politica. Per Una Storia Delle Dottrine 33 (65):5-20.
This monographic section questions the concept of domesticity, and some of its concrete developments, both as a principle of order and as a device through which historically and culturally variable differences and meanings are articulated – starting with those associated with it from the very beginning, namely the values of stability, solidity and centredness. The essays collected here challenge the idea of a separation between domestic and political space, which is made to coincide tout court with that between private and (...)

  4. La disciplina del merito. L’istruzione reciproca in Inghilterra tra XVIII e XIX secolo.Jacopo Bonasera - 2022 - Scienza and Politica. Per Una Storia Delle Dottrine 33 (65):183-198.
This essay takes into account the pedagogical reform for the poor proposed in England by Andrew Bell, Joseph Lancaster and Patrick Colquhoun between Eighteenth and Nineteenth century. Differentiating individuals and reproducing social order through the implementation of a pedagogical plan is a response both to the excessive expectations of well-being raised among the English poor by the Revolution in France, and to the uncontrolled spread of crime and undisciplined behaviours in the new manufacturing districts. This is why social reformers looked (...)

Casalinghe e playboy: la critica allo spazio domestico negli Stati Uniti del secondo dopoguerra.Carlotta Cossutta - 2022 - Scienza and Politica. Per Una Storia Delle Dottrine 33 (65):147-165.
The text examines two critiques of the single-family home model in post-World War II North American suburbs. On the one hand, it investigates the struggles for wages for housework in order to highlight the critique of the processes of female subjectification that take place within the house walls. On the other, it analyses the critique of masculinity that emerges from the pages of Playboy and the Playboy Townhouse project. Finally, it uses these critiques to highlight the different ways in which (...)

  6. Abitare il socialismo. Comfort e politica nella Russia degli anni Venti.Silvia Rodeschini - 2022 - Scienza and Politica. Per Una Storia Delle Dottrine 33 (65):45-77.
In 1920s Russia domestic life is the object of a specific political debate that tries to formulate housing forms and comfort models alternative to the one of the bourgeois house. By analysing the texts written by Fourier, Engels and Russian functionalist architects and the discourses that accompany USSR housing policies, the article reconstructs the concepts of comfort underlying this debate and their functions.

Don Chisciotte e il pubblico.Carl Schmitt - 2022 - Scienza and Politica. Per Una Storia Delle Dottrine 33 (65):199-208.
The work that we have the honour to present here in its first Italian translation is a short essay published by Carl Schmitt in the first half of the ‘10s in the German Journal Die Rheinlande and titled Don Quixote and the public. A very brief but at the same time dense piece of literary criticism in which the future Kronjurist of the Third Reich, in those years still engaged in his legal practice, offers to the readers a juvenile proof (...)

Scienza, filosofia e politica. Kant e le neuroscienze del giudizio morale.Daniela Tafani - 2022 - Scienza and Politica. Per Una Storia Delle Dottrine 33 (65):167-182.
This article discusses the opposition of neurosciences of moral judgement to moral philosophy, shedding light on the political meaning of the thesis according to which a science of morality is possible, or already real, and would demonstrate that rights’ recognition equates to a cognitive error. It furthermore presents some theoretical contributions offered by Kant’s moral doctrine – on condition that one avoids providing an unfounded and caricatural account in order to make it the paradigm of armchair philosophy – about the (...)

This article explores the forms of housing and living of the subaltern classes in the French urban context of the early 19th century affected by the social consequences of the Industrial Revolution. It focuses on the social representations and discourses developed by the liberal elites in order to retrace the genesis of the concepts of “domestic comfort” and “public hygiene”. The cholera epidemic of 1832 and the growth of the hygienist movement are identified as crucial driving forces for the emergence (...)
