ABSTRACT This article attempts to read a text in the book O poço das marianas [The Well of the Marianas], by Eliane Marques. By perceiving it as an oriki, a text typical of the iorubá world, that pays tribute to the head. It may be written for any being: people, animals, orixás, and even for cities. I understand that, to listen to it, I need to start to thinking as nagô does. I explore this way of perceiving the world through (...) some theorists like Muniz Sodré and Leda Maria Martins. With them and others, I notice the importance of the body in African perceptions of the world and understand it is fundamental in reading or listening to the oriki, which can be done as if it was a ritual. By doing so, I find a nagô heart that mixes with the heart of the writer to reinvent itself in literature. I relate this re-creation to the Exunouveau mode of writing, a term coined by Edimilson de Almeida Pereira. (shrink)

ABSTRACT This article retrieves the analysis of black masculinities in Brazilian literature, particularly in Rei Negro [Black King], by Henrique Coelho Neto. The historical novel is addressed as documentary content, in the perspective of Discourse Analysis, as it reevaluates black masculinities in Brazil by evoking the main character as a king, in contrast to the usual position of black men in History and in Literature. ABSTRACT The article intends to discuss the notions of time and ancestry in the writing of the poet and critic Edimilson de Almeida Pereira. A black essayist and thinker who has allowed us, based on his crossroads-literature, to tension and erase not only the hegemonic critique, but also the authoritative, canonical discourse of white supremacy. His poetic criticism has enabled us, from a diasporic perspective, to offset new rumors for criticism and broaden the lens on ancestry. For this, we will (...) focus on his works O ausente [The Absent] (2020) and Orfe(x)u e Exunouveau: análise de uma estética de base afrodiaspórica na literatura brasileira [Orfe(x)u and Exunouveau: Analysis of an Afrodiasporic-Based Aesthetics in Brazilian Literature] (2022) as theoretical-epistemological corpus, we will focus on the conception of time and ancestry, as problematized by our ancestor Leda Martins (2021) from a spiral point of view, as wel as on Eduardo Oliveira (2023) in his aesthetic-ancestral regime, and on the “terreiro-literature” [Sacred Ground Literature] forged by Henrique Freitas (2016), unfolded at the crossroads theoretical and epistemological ideas from thinkers such as Muniz Sodré (2017) and Luiz Rufino (2019). ABSTRACT This paper addresses issues enmeshed with the experience of the diaspora, the situation of black immigrant women affected by the feeling of geographic dislocation, adopting the perspective of female-authored Nigerian literature. The object of study is the short story “The Thing Around Your Neck,” part of the collection of short stories of the same name, by the author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The study aims to discuss the problems faced by black women in transit between the African continent and the (...) United States, as well as the conflicts in the process of identity building that surround their lives in societies that oppress and silence them. The investigation is guided by the post-colonialist approach and problematizes both quotidian and gendered forms of racism grounded in the representations about Africa and its peoples. The analytical reading of the object of study indicates that the short story “The Thing Around Your Neck” presents itself as a treaty against the victimization of Africa and Nigerian women. (shrink)

ABSTRACT The process of coloniality driven by assumptions of modernity has promoted a geopolitical matrix of knowledge that reproduces several social injustices. These mechanisms operating in society persist today, promoting above all the subalternity of bodies-territories, cultures, and knowledge, including mathematical ones. This theoretical paper is part of an ongoing thesis, and aims at answering the following concern: how can the multiple knowledges circumscribed in the cultural manifestation of Zambiapunga be used to reformulate the hegemonic model still present in teaching (...) and learning processes? The objective is to reflect on Zambiapunga as a cultural instrument in service of a Decolonial Education in the classroom. This is a qualitative, bibliographic investigation that identifies Zambiapunga as a candidate to materialize an alternative cultural reference in support of a multi-referenced education which inspires a multicultural curriculum. As a result, vast possibilities were found for using this Afro-diasporic cultural manifestation in the service of a Decolonial Education, especially through different rationalities, memories, musicality, identities, memories, languages, histories, values and customs that were made invisible in the context of coloniality. ABSTRACT This article focuses on the analysis of Marilene Felinto’s novel As mulheres do Tijucopapo [The Women of Tijucupapo]. First published in 1982, this novel significantly represents contemporary Black historical romance in Brazil. The narrative, which suggests an endogenous diaspora, unfolds from São Paulo to Tijuco, implicitly referencing the battle of Tijucopapo that occurred in Pernambuco on April 24, 1646. The impassioned narrator Rísia presents a fragmented critical exploration of the identities that establish “borders of exclusion” (Hall) and constructs a (...) future-oriented view of time that opens new existential domains. I draw upon the concepts of “curved time” and “spiral” as articulated by Leda Maria Martins, as well as the notion of “anachronism” by Georges Didi-Huberman and intertwine them with “event” and “singularity” as proposed by Gilles Deleuze. ABSTRACT The concept of Escrevivência [Writing-living] was first used in 1996 by Conceição Evaristo. From that moment on, there has been an effort to systematize said concept, both by Evaristo and by other researchers. In this paper, we join these researchers, seeking to find some of the key aspects in cultural products considered to be Escrevivências. To this end, we draw on the reflections of Conceição Evaristo and relate them to the thoughts of other black people, such as Bell hooks (...) and Grada Kilomba. We also make use of the French Semiotics to support thoughts and brief analyses of texts such as Maria Felipa, cordel literature written by Jarid Arraes. The research has allowed us to point out the following as key or recurring aspects in Escrevivências: black authorship, (re)creation through fiction, black characters taking on the roles of subjects, an internal point of view, and an ideological consonance. ABSTRACT The objective of this article is to understand the effects of the colonial-slave system on perceptions of childhood by analyzing two autobiographical texts. The first presents Juan Francisco Manzano who narrated his memories as a boy enslaved in Cuba in the early nineteenth century, in The Autobiography of Slave (1840). In the second, we follow Bitita in Bitita’s Diary: The Childhood Memoirs of Carolina Maria de Jesus (1982), by Carolina Maria de Jesus, whose narrative reveals how colonialism structured Brazilian (...) society in the post-abolition period. By marking two distinct historical moments, we seek to glimpse how the literary genre of autobiography allows the affirmation of Black authorship beyond a single denunciatory bias, accompanying possible negotiations that build unique ways of making literature. We thus understand the movements of critical fabulation present in these texts as practices of freedom and construction of identity. (shrink)

ABSTRACT The article intends to demonstrate when the carnival chronicle at the beginning of the 20th century in Brazil was a tool for a national cultural project under bourgeois, univocal and European canons, comparing its occurrences with the carnivalization seen in the chronicle “A tragédia do Cordão Estrela de Dois Diamantes” [The Tragedy of the Star with Two Diamonds Carnival Block], by Luís Edmundo.

ABSTRACT Given the relevance of memes in Internet culture, this study aims to analyze how visual memes reflect discursive positions and construct meanings based on the social voices of the deaf community. This is a qualitative study that involved participant observation of a community account on Instagram called “surdalidades” [“deafties”]. From this account, a sample of three memes was selected and then analyzed with the support of discourse analysis. Results indicate the presence of confrontational positions, which reflect tension with listeners (...) and with the Portuguese language, as well as the need to assert their own linguistic and cultural identity. Thus, memes are configured as forms of political expression, since the style, thematic content, and compositional structure of this genre reveal how different voices from the deaf community express themselves and position themselves through this form of visual communication. ABSTRACT We retrieve in this paper Bakhtin’s definition of polyphony to, firstly, seek its roots in music and then demonstrate how the literary meaning of the term can contribute to the study of contemporary concert music in new understandings of its polyphonic dimension. To this end, in addition to Bakhtin’s Circle writings, we reference academic literature on the concept, both in the areas of literary theory and musicology. For this conceptual expansion, we propose three polyphonic strategies applied to the solo (...) vocal repertoire: 1) the multiplicity of texts, 2) the multiplicity of roles, and 3) the multiplicity of actions. Through this path, the article results not only in the densification of the components that form the concept of polyphony, but also in a performance approach capable of being applied in musical practices. ABSTRACT This paper explores the relationship between linguistic-discursive (de)coloniality, intersecting identities, and discursive practices of resistance and reexistence, employing a critical intersectional discourse perspective to analyze two texts that challenge the epistemic-ontological implications of the term ‘pessoas que menstruam’ [people who menstruate]. To this end, we examined two media-connected texts: “Nós, mulheres, não somos apenas pessoas que menstruam” [We, women, are not just people who menstruate] and “Por que estamos usando o termo ‘pessoas que menstruam’?” [Why are we using the (...) term ‘people who menstruate’?] It feels strange to be accused of biologizing ways of being a woman when, in fact, we are moving in the opposite direction.” These texts position the designation pessoas que menstruam [people who menstruate] in opposition, reflecting the positionalities of the authors’ intersecting identities, and aim to generate alternative knowledge and power structures, particularly through linguistic-discursive activism as a means of reexisting, resisting, and confronting coloniality. ABSTRACT The Testament of Job is an ancient Jewish text, which was not canonized by either Judaism or Christianity, which is why it came to be included among the so-called apocrypha of the Old Testament. This work was written in Greek during the Hellenistic period, probably in Alexandria. Its content is the rewriting of the biblical book of Job, an attempt to update its content in view of the current culture. We intend to point out the manifestation of the grotesque (...) body in the Testament of Job, in accordance with Mikhail Bakhtin’s use of this concept when discussing popular culture. As it is an apocryphal work, the Testament of Job dialogues with the versions of the book of Job written in Hebrew and with the one written in Greek, and therefore its content will be discussed based on its dialogical relationship with both texts mentioned. ABSTRACT The main objective of this article is to specify and analyze the categories that (re)construct the social representation (SR) of the deaf within the discourse of the social group itself. We view SR as an amalgam of several skills that guide and enable the subject-subject, subject-object and subject-world interactions. The discourse intermediates the relationship between the subject’s cognition and the society. We defend the importance of this research because, on a daily basis, many discriminatory practices involve the group and (...) are naturalized, in part, due to lack of knowledge about the deaf and associated issues. In an incipient knowledge field, we are proposing to explore the discursive language marks which spin around socially prejudiced practices naturalized in a mostly hearing society. Through semi-structured interviews, we concluded that deaf people resort to three main discursive strategies to re(construct) a positive SR about the ingroup while at the same time deconstructing a negative SR (re)built by the outgroup. ABSTRACT In this article, we present the results of a research that aimed to analyze the Libras-Portuguese interpreters’ work during the COVID-19 pandemic based on three different speech genres: conference, lecture, and musical lives. To this end, we adopted the simple self-confrontation methodology, developed in the context of the French Activity Clinic, and placed Libras interpreters who worked from these genres face to face with their performances. Based on a theoretical articulation established between Bakhtinian thought and sign language translation and (...) interpretation studies, the analysis undertaken, vertically and horizontally, revealed that the dynamics of the pandemic imposed linguistic, procedural and relational demands and adjustments on interpreters. ABSTRACT This article explores childhood memories with a focus on the transmission of proverbs, following the common thread of culture and the spheres of human activity that make use of language. It aims to investigate the imprints of giving and receiving care found in memories pertaining to the use of proverbs. The chosen methodology involved collective interviews in discussion groups with a group of professionals from a Specialization Course in Education and a group of High School students in a regular (...) evening class, analyzing their recollections of childhood proverbs. The text is structured in two parts: a conceptual analysis of proverbs, and a description of the discussion groups and categories of analysis (Context; Intergenerational Experience; Metaphors and Polyphony; and Care). The closing thoughts suggest that the recollection and narration of proverbs constitute an act of care, fostering a human connection that reveals and touches others. (shrink)

ABSTRACT In our research on the emergence of grammar, we identified a property that receives less attention in acquisitional studies and that seems unknown to the general population that deals with and delights in children’s utterances. This property concerns the conservative attitude observed in their production, which, in general, is characterized as creative. This excerpt from our research, in a sociocognitive (or use-based) perspective aligned with cognitive-functional linguistics, aims to reflect on conservatism and creativity, observed in the statements of the (...) little ones. To this end, we mobilize studies that conceptualize and analyze them. In order to exemplify the phenomena under discussion in the language in use, we selected two scenes from our corpus of parental diary videos in Brazilian Portuguese, published on a social network. The evidence found in the literature and in the scenes analyzed indicate that there is a human tendency to conservatism that ends up highlighting creative occurrences in the use of language. ABSTRACT The article explores a unique type of order which involves the secrets of the creative and poetic life of the “language-creating people” known as the Kazakh zhyrau. The study aims to explore the evolution and artistic characteristics of zhyrau poetic art and its formulaic grammar, tracing its development from ancient forms to its role in national and global epic traditions. The research method evaluates the journalistic genre varieties and features of the poetic art of Turkic-speaking peoples, linking them to (...) their historical roots and the foundational elements of suggestion, magic, myth, rite, and ritual. The study emphasizes the importance of the initial foundations of traditional oral texts, as all art forms, including poetry, are connected with them. A new approach to the study of communicative culture, folklore, and epic poetry is needed. Parry-Lord’s oral tradition approach is currently a productive approach for this purpose. (shrink)

ABSTRACT In several works by the Circle (Bakhtin, Vološinov, Medvedev), the reference to Saussure and/or the specificities of Linguistics, as a science of language, can be found in a dialogue, more or less controversial, between thinkers and epistemological, theoretical and methodological trends that propose different approaches to the complexity represented by human language and, consequently, to its study. In this article, the objective is to circumscribe and discuss the presence of Linguistics, as a science of language established by Saussure, in (...) the writings of Mikhail Bakhtin. After an introduction, the text is organized into three sections, which deal with (1) Saussure’s strong presence in the Circle’s writings; (2) Bakhtin’s dialogue with science in the unity of culture; (3) the dialogue with the linguistic science of the Geneva school in “PCMF”; and, finally, of inconclusive but necessary considerations. Important key moments of reflection stand out in texts signed by Bakhtin, in which Saussure (although not named, but designated by the science he established) deserves to be highlighted, as a necessary scientific-philosophical counterpoint for the constitution of another possibility of understanding and study of language: the dialogical perspective. As a result, it is expected to demonstrate that, since the 1920s, the Bakhtin/Saussure dialogue has been established to distinguish and qualify two complementary ways of understanding language and the place of science in the unity of culture. RESUMO Em diversas obras do Círculo (Bakhtin, Volóchinov, Medviédev), a referência a Saussure e/ou às especificidades da Linguística, enquanto ciência da língua, pode ser encontrada em diálogo, mais ou menos polêmico, entre pensadores e tendências epistemológicas, teóricas e metodológicas que propõem diferentes abordagens para a complexidade representada pela linguagem humana e, consequentemente, para seu estudo. Neste artigo, o objetivo é circunscrever e discutir a presença da Linguística, enquanto ciência da língua instaurada por Saussure, nos escritos de Mikhail Bakhtin. Após uma (...) introdução, o texto se organiza em três seções, que tratam (1) de uma forte presença de Saussure nos escritos do Círculo; (2) do diálogo de Bakhtin com a ciência na unidade da cultura; (3) do diálogo com a ciência linguística da escola de Genebra em “O problema do conteúdo, do material e da forma”; e, finalmente, de considerações inconclusas, mas necessárias. Destacam-se importantes momentos-chave de reflexão em textos assinados por Bakhtin, em que Saussure (ainda que não nomeado, mas designado pela ciência por ele estabelecida) merece destaque, como contraponto científico-filosófico necessário para a constituição de outra possibilidade de compreensão e estudo da linguagem: a perspectiva dialógica. Como resultado, espera-se demonstrar que, desde os anos 1920, o diálogo Bakhtin/Saussure se estabelece, para distinguir e qualificar duas formas complementares de compreensão da linguagem e do lugar da ciência na unidade da cultura. ABSTRACT This article aims to reflect upon the presence of the language acquisition theme in the works of Ferdinand de Saussure, Mikhail Bakhtin and Émile Benveniste, in order to, based on such reflection, describe how this presence gave rise to work perspectives around the theme in research panorama in Brazil. Three major perspectives for studying language acquisition in the country are highlighted: based on Saussurean assumptions, there are the social interactionist studies; in the Bakhtinian perspective, the dialogic-discursive approach; from the (...) Benveniste perspective, the enunciative acquisitional perspective. ABSTRACT This article proposes an interpretation of the ideas of Ferdinand de Saussure and Mikhail Bakhtin that seeks to relate them not through an epistemological point of view, but based on a concept proposed by Henri Meschonnic, according to which one author can be linked to another without an explicit reference to an affiliation between them. The starting point is a comment made by Bakhtin about the translation of François Rabelais’ work into Russian, which Meschonnic cites in his anti-structuralist interpretation (...) of Saussure. Finally, a reflection is made on the relevance of addressing metalinguistic comments that discuss the condition of the speaker, which can be the object of an enunciative-anthropological theorization. To do so, we examine selected works by these authors, seeking to discuss-based on evidence-the role they grant to languages in their formulations. ABSTRACT In this article, we discuss the concept of affiliation in the theoretical-methodological framework of Discourse Analysis to analyze the relationship between Benvenistian thought and Saussurian thought as a relationship of affiliation within the history of ideas that delimits the field of language studies. The analysis, which cuts out paraphrastic formulations from the Course in General Linguistics and Problems in General Linguistics, allowed the understanding of this affiliation relationship as a dialogue, in which a constitutive paradoxical relationship is materialized. This (...) relationship signifies the movement of approximation and displacement/detachment of Benvenistian thought to Saussurian thought. This understanding showed that the different ways of reading the Benveniste-Saussure relationship, already historicized in some way within the history of linguistic ideas belongs to the order of the effect of interpretation in the dispute of the history of science games.
