Abstract

In view of the question, to what democracy should provide an up-to-date answer, it should be stressed that liberal political democracy (historically rooted in human rights) is part of that which is globalizing itself. What has to be determined is the relationship between democracy as political, and the market as economic forms of modernity. This is done under three aspects: (1) the market and democracy in the wake of modernity; (2) the modernization of modernity through a renewed social contract; (3) the problem of the market and politics in the global society.
