Abstract

The essay On Truth and Lie in the Extramoral Sense is a striking skeptical text, which sets Nietzsche apart not only from his precedent “metaphysics of art” in The Birth of Tragedy, but also from the concept of truth itself. The influence of Friedrich Albert Lange and his History of materialism is important in the course that will lead, from the criticism of Schopenhauer's metaphysics, to the positions defended in On Truth and Lie in the extramoral sense.
