Abstract

The introduction discusses the shared themes of German Idealism and phenomenology—principally, the critique of naturalism or a reductive scientific account of reality, the nature of consciousness and subjectivity, the implications of that account for epistemology and ethics, and the significance of intersubjectivity. The introduction also outlines the ways in which twentieth-century phenomenologists reacted against some key assumptions and philosophical methods of the German Idealists. It briefly mentions the key figures in each movement and their central concepts. Finally, it sets out the structure of the volume and gives brief summaries of each chapter.
