On History as an Object, Subject and Method of Inquiry Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) is mostly known today as the funder of American pragmatism, as a logician and as a scientist. Viola’s book contributes to these existing threads in Peirce’s scholarship while at the same time shaping a new domain of Peirce’s studies: Peirce as historian, philologist, and philosopher of science.
