Against Beneficence: A Normative Account of Love
Ethics 119 (1):142-170 (2008)
Abstract
I argue that rather than aiming at the well-being of those whom we love, we should aim to share in their ends. The former stance runs the risk of being objectionably paternalistic and, as I explain, only the latter makes reciprocal relationships possible. I end by diagnosing our attraction to the idea that we should promote our loved-ones’ well-being.Author's Profile
