Abstract
From Condorcet’s public and private reflections on education and on the basis of civilization rises the value of sympathetic sensibility for the building of an affective disposition to justice. Likewise, the natural capacity to share joy and sorrow with other sensible beings is the centre of Lettres sur la sympathie, the book that his wife, Sophie de Grouchy, writes as commentary to Adam Smith’s Theory of moral sentiments. The article points up the originality of the intellectual and human story of the couple, especially referring to the debate of the end of the XVIII century on man, seen between nature and artifice, sensibility and reason
